Hello Ted. Just my thoughts on the hood. 1st. The stock hinges use compression (collapsing expanded springs) to lift the hood. Since my ride has a lift off hood and I don't have a set of stock hinges and and springs I can only give a guesstimate. Using a lift strut would be tough to guess since your trying to use it backwards. My belief is struts are at the rated force when their collapsed. Since the distance end to end of the hood springs sprung and collapsed is not very long your limited on the higher rates available. Using a 20 inch strut my first pick was the 250 lb units. Pulling the lid down compressing the struts bowed the hinges and moved the fit adjustment bolts even though they were tight. 30 lb struts wouldn't lift the lid up at all. I would use a longer strut 20 inches say remove the springs, attach the top of the strut to the stock spring bracket and the lower strut bracket to the backside of the inner fender well.
