Uneven main clearances after line hone – could the machine shop have messed up?

-
I just like winding guys like you up. And I see its working. Your just a name caller . People can't spell things wrong without criticism.

I came to this post and gave my opinion on post #5 then #11 . Instead of bad mouthing me why not give your opinion and let the PO decide.

You open your mouths and I'll just keep feeding the fire. What do you contribute to the site besides your Mouth.

I give my address to everyone and welcome all to come here except the assholes. There are many visitors that come to my place and my sons from this site. You don't have a dam clue. Steve won't post anything on this site due to people like you. He just thinks your all a bunch of idiots and won't waist his time.

So he’s that arrogant too?

Surely he could enlighten us with his massive knowledge.

He would be an asset to the community.

Too bad he’s a chip off the old block.

Hi,

I had my 360 line-honed last week and installed new Clevite H-series main bearings.
When checking with Plastigauge, I got these clearances:
  • Main #5 (rear): 0.0010"
  • #4: 0.0017"
  • #3: 0.0020"
  • #2: 0.0015"
  • #1: 0.0015"
The crank journals all measure 2.810", and everything was torqued in the correct sequence using the same specs the machine shop used during honing.

The strange part is that #5 is considerably tighter, while the middle mains are looser. That doesn’t line up with what I’d expect from a proper line hone.
My opinion is that all of them are on the tight side — especially #5.

I know Plastigauge isn’t 100% accurate, and I’ll verify everything with a dial bore gauge when I get home tonight, but the pattern still seems odd enough to question.

Question:
Could the machine shop have made a mistake, or is there something else I should be checking?

Also, what main bearing clearance should I be targeting?
It’s a 408 making around 550 hp. I’m thinking 0.0020"–0.0030", but I’d like to hear what others are running.

Any input is appreciated.

My main question is :

Did you put that thick engine assembly lube on the back side of the main bearings inserts?

As in Post #72, Stated that the back side of the insert goes in dry.

If you "Goobed it Up" it will thow off the plasti-gauge reading.

Please Answer...

You must not be a good machinist that is in demand , Or your doing something wrong. Steve is constantly buying things to right off. Bought new a Bobcat and he don't ever leave the property with it. A $150k Toy when we already had one. Went bigger with AC , Heat and power angle plus GPS depth gauge.

If its a tool or auto related you can right it off. Every 3 months he has to spend money. The big Diesel refresh is where the money is at.

And with all the new Cummins dropping the cheaper valve seats on the new Rams the money keeps flowing in.

Plus the Vipers, Audis, GTR's and exotic cars. There is no money in the older V8 stuff because they are hobby cars, People who own them don't have money unless they are one off cars being restored. Steve does not advertise and there is no sign on the road. If you don't know someone its hard getting in the door.

I'm a employee, and the best in the county, were a small shop and my boss pays me the states upper scale for wages.
things aren't like they used to be.
Machines and tooling cost more than I make a year so, that's quite the idiotic assumption.
I machine all makes, anything that comes in. I do everything in this shop and people bring it to me because there's no machine shop jail.
If I remember correctly aren't you the guy that took your stuff out of a shop but also took other people's stuff ???

Why do you start crap just to act a victim.
Your son is the machinist, not you so quit posting where your input is unnecessary and highly unwanted.

I did give my opinion, I showed you that you were wrong, and you just doubled down own your ignorance. By my count in this thread alone you have belittled at least 4 well known, high quality machinists. Nobody on this site cares if the "mystery son" of yours posts here, shesh, talk about not contributing anything to the site, that's a good example. And you dont either, all you do is trash other people, trash top level restorations, trash every other engine shop, and brag about how much stuff you have, OR post sympathy posts about your health. You are a first class TROLL.
Oh, and everyone reading this thread you ruined, is well aware of my contributions to this site.

He IS the guy whole stole thousands of dollars worth of OTHER customers parts. He felt justified because he got ripped off, so to illustrate his true colors, he stole from people who he had no beef with. He is also the guy who has posted on here before about how he has been successful buying cars out from other members to part out.

That's exactly what this forum needs to get rid off people like him. Big mouth, know nothing, crook.

don't worry, i'm sure he'll threaten to quit again here in just a bit. it's about time for the quarterly tantrum...

[also betting this thread will get deep sixed like all the other ones, so his antics will not be left for all to see.]

Nice back pedal. You are correct that many shops cant do it correctly. Lots CAN however. And if installing new caps, like 4 bolt replacement caps, it absolutely needs line bored first, as those caps are normally way undersize, and you could not hone that. But on a worn factory block, with distorted main bores, there is no way to bore it on center without doing exactly what you claim to avoid. You think you can clean up a oval housing bore with a boring bit and not affect the centerline? Tell us your not a machinist without telling us your not a machinist
Why do you always talk **** on oldman? Whenever he post things you don't agree with you put him down. I see many engines come out of Steve's shop and his dad is always there helping. Two of the nicest people you ever met always helping everyone with what ever anyone needs.

Because most of the stuff he posts he didn't do and acts like he did.

i see the burner account is back...

maybe you should go back and read the thread and some of the others where it's OMM that talks ****, puts down and disparages posters when he doesn't agree with somebody or something that's not done "his one true way™ "

maybe his online persona could take a page out of his IRL persona...
