No, you don't want to be filled in..... Soap Opera drama was created for women without a life. :D :D If a person doesn't like the content on a youtube channel, simply don't click on it. Problem solved.

All u have to do is watch the vid of the 318 he built that got dynoe’d at Nick’s Garage. U can see exactly the kind of guy he is. Total hack job. That did it for me. I’ll never watch another vid of his. Kim

If big HP is not the goal a 318 is a great engine and like any other engine properly built will make good power.

I guess I look at things differently because if I were building a stock stroke performance engine on a budget it would be a 360. They're cheap, rings, bearings, gaskets and machine work will cost the same. I haven't looked but I'd think that a 360 has a better piston selection too. For me the benefit of the extra torque would be worth the extra few dollars a 360 core would cost.

I think Tony chose the wrong word "architecture" when he was talking about the similarities in valve sizes between the 318 and the 5.3 LS. The dimensions of the valves are similar but the architecture of the heads (and blocks) are vastly different. Todays engines are designed to be more efficient than the engines from the 60-70's, so they make more power while using less fuel. The 5.7 in my 2014 Ram is a perfect example, 395 hp and 405 ft pounds of torque and is 348".

Not hating on the 318, they are great engines. Tony is right, they suffer from the same perception as the 360 as not being a performance engine. Just because they weren't offered as a performance engine from the factory doesn't mean they can't be.

As I've tried to preach so many times before to guys considering the low first gear 998 and 999 AND 4 speed over drive. In these light little cars, it can be overkill.

Disagree. I think the opposite. I bet even UT will admit corners were cut and that was not the proper way to do a rebuild. Watch the other videos that he does. He has a lot of experience from street racing to Nitro cars to magazine writer. He is a pretty decent ambassador for our brand and he does it from a DIY backyard perspective. JMI.

UTG is "entertainment" hes a great story teller, but his mechanical skill level is in the range of your average back yard builder. He makes a living with his entertainment channel, but no one should take anything he says as gospel.

A 318 is a very solid foundation no one can argue that to compare one to a hemi gen 3 for performance potential is not realistic. There are wedge heads that will support big numbers on a big cubic inch small block Mopar . With a 318 You just can't get enough bore for starters, the biggest difference is block integrity. You can pump up a gen 3 to 1,000 horses no problem. See how long a stock la block will last with those kind of numbers. After dumping 15 grand plus begin to get it there. 600 to 700 horsepower is all I would expect a stock la block to be expected to take.

There have been people on here that make that or higher with an LA or a Magnum. There's a guy on the Dakota R/T with a 4190# truck and a 5.9 Mag with a turbo going 10.51 @130. According to the calculator, that's close to 700, and I'm assuming that's to the tires. Not to mention plenty of guys going way faster than that on stock 360 blocks N/A.

If you're making 700 horsepower and you can only turn a 10-5 there's quite a bit of room for improvement, and there are gen 3s that are turboed that are doing sub-8s I don't get your point

Yes for the turbo guys the block strength is gonna be a factor. for most builds bore size ain't gonna matter much.

Whats a super hot 318 ? speedmaster or eddy heads 10.5:1 airgap 750 and some kind of 285 cam ?

Okay first off I'm not trying to start s*** but I disagree totally with bore size not being a major issue in a normally aspirated motor without the benefit of forced induction and even with valve shrouding is a huge component of intake flow huge I'm not going down this rabbit hole I don't have to defend a lion you just open the cage lol

Exactly. A light car, and especially a light, high horsepower car will hate a steep starting line ratio. But a heavy car with not so much power will want more starting line ratio even if it makes the gear splits wider.

2750 with me in it and depending what engine had between 670 and 750 HP still liked a 3.09 first gear, even with a 5.57 axle ratio. If I had a lower RPM it would have hated that starting line ratio.

There is more to first gear ratio than just claiming a close ratio box is all that.

All things being equal, (which of course they never are) comparing a stock 318 and a stock LS is like comparing the radios we used to get vs. the “entertainment systems” of today’s cars - the tech used to design and build them is eons beyond what was available back in the day.

You got a guy by you that can port the snot out of a W2 with outstanding results in excellance?
IMO, I think the drunkin bastard see's UT's yelling at Lambchop as being a mean bastard with no reguard to his total 100% rookie state. (I thought it a bit ruff myself in addition to being overly excited a bit much...) Lambchop had just gotten cancer, (IIRC, Known at the time) but has later beat it. His rank on the OD 4spd isn't exactly justified IMO, because UT said up front he would be using it since he had it. Instead of making a purchase. The whole car effort is a "On The Cheap" exercise as well as a surprise sleeper being a 4 door B body of smog years. While most people use the standard 4 spd in some variation, early or late unit, normally the 4spd OD is overlooked by almost everyone except thjose loking for the OD ratio to cruise in. While NOT ideal IMO, I also don't see an issue with it's use and even better because it is a USE WHAT YA GOT deal. IMO, as long as you can get the car to hook well, then the starting line ratio is killer. the big drop going into 2nd is something you workaround and plan for. IF your not smart enough to know what to do, ....
then trade the transmission out. I don't see 4th as a viable gear to use onthe strip. But perfect for gettinghomeon after the track.

The other guy, Lunar Outlaw, was woefully unprepared in a big way and UT made the best possible choices to do what he had to do for the live show. Lunar Outlaw did the major screwing up.

Tony aka "White Punk on Nitro" the FABO parts reseller, had LC try out his POS car at the track TnT and kept blaming LC for the car not getting out of the hole. He ragged him out, because the POS would not get out of it's own way. At best that car should be in a bracket II on a Sat night, but it would die soon. UT killed the previous 2 engines and finally went through enough lifters at the OREillys till he found a bad one and blamed his poor bouilds and breakins on the lifter mfg. People get hypnotized by shows on TV. That helps them escape and believe some BS along the way as a fantasy really. If UT throws shit up against the wall and it sticks, and he gets to hang out and put out race 101 tips and how to cobble together mainly garbage more power to him ;).

As far as the 318 UT thing goes, he is only trying to justify his poor selection for a " " 10 sec car. IMO.
