I see no reason in the world why that procedure would not be acceptable.

I am getting ready to so similar when I assemble my next slant six. I'm going to use two sets of main bearings to get a full groove set. That requires grinding the locating tabs off the bearings going in the main caps and making new ones in the right place.

You dont need tabs....bearing crush keeps the bearings in place.
New engines do not use them anymore.

I thought about that.....but I was thinking more about the half that does have the tabs holding it all in place. I think you're right. I don't think I'll need anything either.
