what is the best thing to use to get the 50 year old adhesive off the top of the car, I used 80grt paper and a DA sander didn't work out so good, I did manage to scratch the hell out of it thought, so what do you guys think, joejoe

There are diamond imbedded sanding discs that do a good job on hard to cut old paint, my neighbor used them to remove some old paint on his register covers that nothing else would touch! Might be an option. I have that project looming also!

Also 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner #08984, any auto parts store

It depends, is your glue hard like a brick or still flexible? If its still flexible sandpaper does not work well on it. Mine was dry and hard and 40 grip DA worked good on it.
