Specifically, air travel.
93 years ago today, the first non-stop Hawaiian airplane flight was completed after flying 2,400 miles from Oakland, CA, to Wheeler Field in Hawaii. The flight was in a Fokker C-2 piloted by U.S. Army 1st LTs Lester Maitland and Albert Hegenberger.
The flight only took 25 hours and 50 minutes.
The same route today takes just under 5 hours.
The U.S. Navy failed in their 1925 attempt in a PN-9 seaplane.
The Navy aviators, perhaps more comfortable at sea, ditched more than 300 miles from Oahu. Ingeniously, the crew stripped the fabric from the aircraft’s lower wing, and sailed the airplane to their destination.
