What’s it worth Boyd Coddington 66 panel 426

I'm talkin about putting several people on and charging for each's full labor. That's like saying you have a shop with 150 years experience. There's no way that's true, because people lives overlap one another. You don't just bend people over to the tune of 10 mechanics full labor prices. That's bullchit. You find a happy medium.
You were quoting a post about a one-man shop @$100/hr. Rob, and that's what I'm talkin' about, even tho' the guys I'm referring to did both solo and had 1-2 helpers at certain times.

What I was talkin about was where somebody said Boyd charged for several mechanics. Maybe I farkkin misquoted. Skyooze the heck outta me if I did.

I don't know how Boyd charged, but why wouldn't he charge for multiple fabricators ?

I don't see the difference if one guy puts 2,000 hours into a project or 10 guys put 200 hours each still 2,000 hours of labour (same cost) just gets done quicker, months instead of years.

^^This^^ Man hours are man hours, unless you have so many working that they get into each other's way

I'm not saying not to charge for multiple fabricators. I'm saying if you use multiple guys, you don't charge their FULL price. That's almost like skimmin. That's my opinion and I'm stickin to it. It's not wrong cause it's mine. If you don't like it, then argue with somebody else. I don't have to justify my opinions to anybody and I'm certainly not starting with you.

That’s right,,,,he (Boyd,) isnt paying that guy 120 bucks an hour .
The dealerships,,,they don’t pay their mechanics 140 bucks an hour .
Nobody will ever take a bigger screwing than at a dealer,,, nobody !
I appreciate everyone’s talent,,,,and this kind of custom work is special .

However,,,,look at that machine from Boyd .
It looks like a tremendous amount of work was performed on the frame area .

Everything else is mediocre,,,regular body work .
It’s only saving grace is the Hemi sitting in it,,,,and it’s attached to a 727 .
An excellent transmission,,,,but nothing outstanding for this amount of money .

And besides,,,receipts mean very little nowadays .
Business men have been forging documents and receipts since the days of old .

I'm not arguing, I don't care or know how Boyd or any of these shops charge, my point was probably charged by man hours (maybe not) and giving Boyd popularity at the time, I imagine that it was quite easy to rack up a big bill in labour alone, hence a $184k bill for a half done truck, all I was trying to say.

I don't care what the shop rate is. This ain't flat-rate, if You've got 6 guys workin' on it, You ain't gonna make a dime chargin' by the rate/hour & payin' the help by the hour......that ain't how it works. Having multiple people working on Your project has the added value of getting it done quicker, it's that simple, this ain't rocket science....

That's why I don't do custom work on cars
I'm at 140 and cheap think I'll get a raise in the new year
I get people from the dealer all the time do more then their est. For normally under 1/2 the price ....but most customers don't understand custom work it's doing the same thing 3 or 4 times to get it right
I would think Boyd charged for every man minute spent on a car at 150 200 +
It easy to bankrupt an owner
Not saying it was wrong....every one needs to get paid ...it just you need deep pockets to get to the end
Some of these big builds have a thousand +++++++ man hrs hard to get that back
I stick to doing oe work when I look at an exhaust or a shifter job I know what to expect...Just did a short shifter for a friend on his kids s4. I would feel bad charging him the 4hr I spent playing with it
It would have been 1/2hr if stock

I agree. And I'm saying it's damned shaky to have charged that much and not have a running and driving "something".

The Boyd build...

Vs the stock bodywork. Shows some of the work already done. Drip rails removed, seams filled, fender openings completely re-contoured, handles, hinges and all emblems shaved, core support altered, etc... Not worth anywhere near the amount of money already charged, but Boyd was red hot as a builder for awhile and could charge whatever he wanted. A couple of his custom builds set the whole street rod genre and rich people were lining up to get a Boyd build. As already said, fools and their money

The $184K in receipts is pretty much meaningless at this point (if it ever really meant anything anyway). Everything that was done with the frame, for example, will have to be revisited because of the surface rust shown in the pictures. It's a full start over, everything has to come apart and be prepped again. And yeah, sitting since 2007? Some of that stuff isn't even good anymore.

If someone GAVE you that build, if you're paying someone to finish it you're still $100k to go.

Heck. I get excited to spray some topcoat for 20 minutes with no runs!!!!!! I work for FREE! Well, I don't bill myself anyway!

Not bad looking renderings, there’s still a lot of work to be done to get it looking like those.

The renderings have a chopped top

When I first saw the photos the first thing I thought was that it needed a chop, but kept my mouth shut.

I didn't know Boyd had planned to chop it, or at least he did according to the renderings.

Nobody's with big money's going to want that thing with the original roof line.

It has a five-head and needs chopped in the worst way.

That should only set you back another couple hundred hours.
