What’s it worth Boyd Coddington 66 panel 426

-
The renderings have a chopped top

When I first saw the photos the first thing I thought was that it needed a chop, but kept my mouth shut.

I didn't know Boyd had planned to chop it, or at least he did according to the renderings.

Nobody's with big money's going to want that thing with the original roof line.

It has a five-head and needs chopped in the worst way.

That should only set you back another couple hundred hours.
Maybe even a six head. Looks like something outta the movie Cars.

I wish I had the skills myself to finish this but that’s why it’s still exactly how it was when it left Boyd’s. I’ve got good mechanical skills but not so much on paint and finish work.
Not that hard, just takes forever & you'd be saying WTF have I gotten myself into. You can do it. Just keep making progress so you don't lose hope, like any project keep doing something.
Make it into a rat rod looking truck would Maybe be a little less work.(Cue RR haters here!)
And despite others brand opinions these trucks are Very Cool, appreciated & have a following. Don't let wankers dissuade you.

You don't have to do it like Boyd would've. I'd get it running and driving, put it on the road, doesn't need full interior at first buckets and gauges will do, and finish as you drive it and if you do sell it's easier to sell a running and driving car, get some fun out of it.

Could sell the Hemi and put a 318 in it...
I wonder what would be a bigger PITA (as a new owner): Going through that hemi, or asking questions on yet another 318 thread? I mean, the last few have gone over so well....

Anyway, I label you "pot stirrer", sir!

Yeah just trying to have a laugh... but seriously with that panel van the OP would get a nice chunk of cash for the Hemi, then build the panel wagon with a small block and sell... that it could work out money wise.

I'm afraid you came to get answers but many in the FABO community had a really low opinion of and see no providence in anything by a jerk such as him.
But you could tell the guys in the shop knew what they were doing, but you never got to see if Boyd could do F-all or if he was just a desk rider and 'Idea Man'. Seem to remember he didn't like to get dirty. But, I've never looked further back to see if he was capable @ one time. Foose worked for him and was his designer, while Boyd played Businessman, making wheels & going bankrupt. Then Foose left.

Yeah,,,Foose was a very talented car guy and left .
After the best of Boyd’s talent left,,,what happened then .
It seemed like after Charlie left,,,it was all downhill then .

In the early days,,Boyd was a very big boy,,,,lost a lot of his weight after he got famous .

I actually have another rendering of some custom one off rims that were to be made for it I’ll post it tonight. Thanks for the words of encouragement Woody!
I was concerned that my talent level doesn’t match that of any of the guys who worked on this in the past which is why it is exactly how it left Coddington hot rods. I have a 70 bee that the hemi would look real good in but hate to separate it at this point. The general mock up is complete, headers were on and clearanced for steering column both of which have been removed, so I do believe they were just starting to disassemble for paint, etc.

Sounds like a fun project. Try to find a windshield before you dive in. And rear door glass if they're not flat, door glass is flat, but make sure you have window regulators. Maybe they did electrics already. Other than that I didn't see much more missing. Rear doors may've been hung on to go, as dont look like they fit right. Somone said worth more running, they're right.
Even a flat black paint job would look good. You can tell if you use Black Epoxy Primer if you like the look, but its no top coat, as it won't last in the sun. And you can save time if you prep good enough 1st time you can spray color before epoxy primer dries without sanding between coats.
Get rid of rust & spray it w/epoxy to seal it. You Will have to let it cure this time, if you aren't satisfied w/ body straightness, to add fillers. Then sand & reshoot when satisfied, spot seal the filler first, then a full seal coat (reduced epoxy works) & then reprime & paint while it's still green(epoxies cure thru mixing a Hardener or Catalyst & some are green(un-cured) for 8 hours.
Read all the info you can & ask questions of piant store guy if you know one. Or on here of course. Then be proud even if it's not perfect show paint. I've not used newer paints. Acrylic Enamel or Deltron were the newest I've used. Of course wear a top notch breathing mask, paints that harden with a Catalyst(even some tractor paints use them now)can put you in the Hospital. Tyvek jump suit, to protect skin. Also won't wash off.
Engine might run for a long time if you don't abuse it. Ask others what problems they had. Might want an OD trans for the street to keep revs lower.

That front suspension looks nice & they knew what they're doing, but I'd still ',Check the work', before removing to paint. Check for binding, check bumpsteer & caster camber curves .
Just remembered you said it's bagged, so maybe its an available setup(have a reciept?) and it is ready to go.

Ya I’m going to have to lift the body off to paint the frame etc. if I do end up tackling this myself. I was told these were going to be a one-off wheel design for it.

i don't know if i missed it, but i'm trying to suss out what the ask is here.

are you trying to get out from under it?
are you trying to determine if it's worth building?
do you want to keep it and you're weighing the options?

there's a lot of plays here, and most all of them are subjective.

My original intentions when posting were to get an idea of how much I should ask for it to sell. I honestly don’t have the skills to complete at the same level as Coddingtons shop and I have recently retired and don’t have the funds to hire a shop to finish it for me.

Well like said hock that Hemi, drop a 318/904 in it to get it moving then sell the Town Panel...the whole shebang should get ya about 30k and that's low side...

Looks like most the hard work is done, do the best you can and get it on the road and enjoy it, I wouldn't worry about getting it perfect, I'd start with doing the minimum to get it on the road and finish as I drive/enjoy it.

Get some harbor freight spray guns paint it and get it up and running. Who cares if its Boyd Coddington / Chip Foose level of quality. Then sell it back to that more money then brains guy who sunk 180k into that thing.
