is this a 400 or 440? I thought 830 casting was for a 440, but it says 400 on the thing... looks like a 1974

That # is not listed anywhere I could find, a friend of mine had one a while back and I think it is an industrial engine. I don't think it was ever put in a car or truck.

There were a few different casting numbers used on 400's. But that is strange that it's an 830 casting and a 400...every list I have saved shows that's only 440.

Just look for the pad up by the distributor. A low deck won't have that

It’s at a farm near Winnipeg so it might be from a Versatile tractor, they used 318 and 400s. It looks like orange is the original colour and I would guess all passenger car engines would be blue by 74...

It's a 74 400, just like it should be. The number is listed in several places on the interwebs.

That casting number isn't listed in GG's book but 30 seconds on google will find lots of blocks with that casting number.

It isn't hard to figure out what a block is even if you don't recognize the casting number. B vs. RB is easy to tell. The stampings on the ID pad tell you what the engine is and the VIN number will tell you the year and model of car that it went into.

I was out buying some other parts at a farm and spotted it, I’m going back next week with a friend who builds engines to grab it .... he thought the numbers were Strange that I sent him.

Still a mystery why all the block casting number lists don't show it. Maybe it was one incomplete list, then everyone copied it.

Most sites say that up front, and ask for numbers you have that aren't on the list. I never found the link again I saw it on.

I did see that one but I was looking more for auto, truck, industrial, if It were automotive you think it would be more in print.

The site I saw it on originally looked like the other lists, just without the 3830830 casting number.

Correct.Mine does not have the raised pad like my 1972 440 has.My 400 is a couple of weeks older than the original posters. It has a casting date of 3-18-74,and its numbers read 3830830-400-5.I bought this block hot tanked and magnafluxed, but nobody in a couple hours Radius seems to have a ultrasonic tester.

I think the 3830830-400 block casting is a rare Road Runner only block. Had to get the 4bbl motor thought.

Just a joke, but I do have a block with that casting number that (per the seller) came out of a ‘75 RR. VIN stamped on the block starts with 5B so seems reasonable, and I saw a 75 RR in his driveway so I think it is legit.

No idea if it is the “big” cam, dual exhaust E-68 motor though, but it does have the 4bbl intake on it. I would have guessed the E-68 motor would have a forged crank (this one is cast), but just a guess on my part.
