I decided to start a new thread since the old one had to do with cam and compression questions on my 340.

I ordered the Lunati 740 "baby Voodoo Solid" which will be way more lift than I've had before and should be fun for sure. Also a set of Lunati beehive springs. My Mopar machinist gave my valve guides a thumbs up which is financially a bit relief!! Picked up new seals, and have the valves cleaned up, working on the heads.

I am looking at the Howards EDM liftersI do want to ask if you guys have rec

I have used crower cool face mechanical lifters and they worked fine, no problems.

Only two or three making flat tappet lifters... Likely Howard's come from Hylift-Johnson which is good.

Maybe it's overkill, but insurance it seems. Should extend the life of the life of the cam I'd think.

Agree. I bought the Howards since they were the lower cost.

I’m thinking I got mine from Hugh’s and all is good after 3 years with a .650 lift cam. Coming apart for rebuild soon. Ran 5.98@113mph on its last pass in the 1/8.

Since I already have ft solids and don't expect to win the lottery my SBM is getting old fashioned lifters sans edm holes...I ain't skeered.

I chose the Crower for my Ford 400 build. Plan to put it in the truck this summer.

I think my solids are from Crower... not sure who made them. No oil band.

No EDM back in '93 when this was originally built. I've never flattened a cam during break-in always run a break in spring or just run one spring then break in the cam and reinstall the inners and damper if so equipped. Most stock spec cams have soft springs so breakin is pretty easy.

But you guys already know that.

I’m pretty sure with proper break-in that regular solids would be fine, but the EDMs can’t hurt, so will probably go with them. (Howard’s)

                  Thanks for the responses!!

I wonder about that tiny oil hole. I may be over-thinking it but you'd probably want to keep the oil thinner and cleaner to keep from blocking that passage.

Thanks all! Ordered some Howard’s EDMs today. The new Lunati cam and a set of beehive springs arrived today also. A set of Mr Gasket .028 head gaskets and some Felpro timing cover, intake gaskets on the way as well.

Getting past some worry over which parts to order, and on to the fun part!!!
I’m slow but will get it back together. Cleaning ports with wire brush on a Dremel and may lap the valves a bit before assembly.

your motors never get to idle so you always get plenty of splash

My EDM's have a little wheel on the bottom. It's cool because the cam profile can be get much bigger for the same specs.

That's the common thought on that BUT I read a few months ago of how a very reputable dirt modified engine builder sez he really sees very little performance differences between a flat tappet vs. roller in his engine builds.

                          I was surprised, too.

This guy builds $30,000 SBC motors.

Did he say it was a negative difference? Are you building dirt track race engines?

These are questions one has to ask before making a decision.

Wish I could find the article...

Simply put he said he found little to no difference in power between the two.

Usable? Dyno? Don't know the answer.

Dirt track stuff is what I do... Only for myself using trusted machine shops.

I was concerned about the holes getting plugged, but have had them for 7 years. Have had them out of the motor about 3-4 times since. Check each one and they were clear. I don’t remember who made them, but I would go EDM again in the future.
