So I keep hearing about the 408 stroker. I know it starts as a 360 but what do you do to make it a 408? Is it expensive? Just wondering cuz I bought a 360

408 is kind of a vague description of a small block la engine with a 4" crankshaft. The displacement will very with bore sizes but yes, a 408 has its stroke increased to move it from a 340/360 to over 400 ci.

Yes it's expensive, I've got about $13,000 into my 418 (340 based) stroker. If you already have good heads, intake and cam you can build on a lot cheaper. Also my rotating assembly is a Molnar forged which is more expensive than a Scat or Eagle. Expensive BUT a lot of fun. Mine dynoed at 490 HP and 516 TQ.

The meanest Small Block Mopar ever. Able to tow the longest heaviest ugliest loads, and embarrass lesser engines at will. You don't need no steenkink diesel.

I was looking at those eagle cranks today on summit. Saw one for $371? Seems pretty fair. But once you do a crank you gotta do more good rods and pistons too. I’m thinking stock crank good rods and pistons

Not a dang thing wrong with a 360. Punched out .030 it is now a 6.0 Ltr. There are a few fellas here running mid to low 10’s on 360’s.

If you're replacing pistons anyways, you might as well buy stroker pistons. Cast Scat crank is plenty strong for most people. The problem is, as with most projects, they start to snowball once you're into them. I ended up going full forged bottom end, full roller top end, ported Edlebrock heads, etc. Well north of $10k in engine and drivetrain. Don't forget you'll need chassis and brake mods to handle the power and big tires to put it to the pavement. Is it worth it? I'd say hell yeah, if you have the means, I'd highly recommend it.

Actually when I decided to build the 418 I had NO IDEA it was going to cost so much! You figure out the cost in your head and you say "That should only cost $7000.00" but it's all of the things you don't think about.

Very good choices! How hard are you gonna hammer on your 360? Any serious racing or just street use?

I have been running the scat cast crank with thier h beam rods for well over 50,000 miles and probably 700 runs at a hp level of about 400 hp at the rear wheels. Pulled it apart to change pistons. The crank was still straight and went right back in. The rods ends were round and spot on. I wouldn’t hestitate to run the scat cast crank kit with h beam rods up to about 500hp. The eagle cast crank won’t work at that level. As to the longevity of the block I was running the icon forged dished piston and changed to the flat top for compression. The bores were still round and straight when changing pistons.
