I hope its okay in this forum.

Can you guys ID this engine for me?

I pulled it out of the Jensen to restore the engine bay and we decided to put a comp xe268 in with a dbl roller chain.
Engine has about 26K original.
Vehicle is a 74 so I am pretty sure that date code is 73.
The Jensen factory painted all the engines black after receiving them. So that's why there is black paint over Chrysler blue.

Strange Maltese cross on the pad near intake front.

I believe the Maltese cross indicates a underground crank. It was done at the factory instead of scrapping a crank.
 
These marking are noted below. The stamping on the bottom of the block will be the formal serial number for that block and read similar to the following:
9-10-68 PT38326010001. These numbers are decoded as follows:
A. The first numbers are the date of the stamping (9-10-6eight)
B. The next letters indicate the engine assembly plant. The next three digits indicate cubic inch displacement
D. The next four digits (2601) are the 10,000 day calender numbers: 2601 = Sept 10, 1968.
E. The final four numbers (0001) show that this was the first engine assembled that day.

S = 1962
T = 1963
V = 1964
A = 1965
B = 1966
C = 1967
D = 1968
E = 1969
F = 1970
G = 1971
H = 1972
J = 1973
4T = 1974
5T = 1975
6T = 1976
7T = 1977
8T = 1978

OTHER STAMPINGS:
Diamond = 0.008-in. oversize tappets
Maltese Cross = 0.001-in. undersized crankshaft
Maltese Cross and an X = 0.010 undersized crankshaft
A = 0.020-in. oversized cylinder bore
B = 0.010-in. undersized main and rod bearings
E = cast crankshaft
H = standard 4bbl
HP = high performance
LC = low compression
O.S. = 0.005 oversized valve stems
P = premium fuel recommended
R = regular grade fuel may be used
S = special engine
WT or TW = water test
X = oversized valve guides

ASSEMBLY PLANTS:
K = Toluca

T = Trenton (400 and 440 only)

you better check compression on that thing considering that relativly short camshaft. Jensen got Highcompresion/HP/Magnum engines after they stoped being available in new cars in the US. oh and im happy to see that it does no longer have the pieces of junk installed that was supposed to be called exhaust manifolds.
 
Yes PLEASE do yourself a favor and get rid of the phenolic timing SPROCKETS

Judging from the missing tooth, it's already starting to "go" LOL
 
Don't be afraid to spend the money on a good set with billet SPROCKETS ;)

The billet ones don't wear down as quickly which can enable quicker chain "stretch"...and I seem to recall your concern about not wanting to be in the engine bay any time soon.

It appears to have a steel crank - internal balance right?
Harmonical balancer is thin and does not have weight offset.

How do I get head type and rated compression? .

Yea we bought the cam n lifters 6- 8 years ago, at the time, did not put much thought into it.

Looks like the head PN is on the intake runner - a normal 400 / 440 head for '74. The heads have red springs with a black coil spring damper inside. Those normal?

To measure the actual CR, the heads will have to come off and you'll need to buy a burette or at least some method to measure the volumes...

I just tore down down a 440 72 or 73 motor home engine that had the narrow (forged) damper last week not only was it a forged crank but it also had the six pack rods (2951908 )odd thing was the balancer did not have the additional offset on it. So I guess you just never know what they put in them in the early 70's.

Should be I agree 67Dart. As far as I could tell the engine has never been molested. Std bore, had a double roller timing chain and gears with the pentastar, windage tray, head gaskets were the steel shims with the pentastar on them. I thought when I saw the thin balancer I was doing pretty good with a forged crank. It threw me off with the heavy rods.
 
...............I've had a few 440 with 908 rods and a neutral balancer ran fine without any vibration at all, in fact I have 1 in storage right now, I know this as I have it torn down..........kim........
