I always thought like 68 was the first year for an LA 318 but I decoded a vin to a 66 fury and the decoder is saying it would have an LA 318 not a poly originally.

So who knows when the LA came out??

My 67 out of a Belvedere also had the closed chambered '920' heads.
I have not seen or heard of a 66 318 LA, so far...

of course a 318 in a model year 67 could have been built and/ or installed in 66
which vin for LA, which vin for Poly?

My Father had ordered a 67 Plymouth and when I heard about it I assumed it would be a poly, but when I opened the hood there was the 318 LA engine.

FWIW, it was a year later in Canada. In which Poly engines were still used in trucks.

Ok, 1967 car model year was the 1st for the LA318. Trucks went a little longer. And of course the Canadians kept the poly a little longer

1966 - last year of the 361 and the 383 changed to an LA (with a 2-bbl version to replace the 361- except for the 2bbl it is the same as the 4bbl - high compression etc)
1967 - new 318 and of course the 440
1968 - the 340

See the change

Poly in 67 cars and trucks. Although I did see a LA 318 in a 67 but don’t know if it was original or not. 440s were available in 66 in Canada.maybe even 65. Kim

After reading the posts here I an convinced this car would and should have a poly

PH23E6

So it's a 66 model year car

Late 65 for the 66 MY 440
I had both 65 and 66 Imperials 413 cable shift 440 column shift
I thought about combining them into a stretch limo

67 1st year of LA 318. I had one in a 67 coronet.

On a side note, an old friend "back in the day" had a junk Dodge, I needed a temporary engine. This was about ?? 1977 or so. He thought it was a 318, sold the greasy mess to me for 50 bucks, and it turned out to be a 273 LOL. Dumped it into the 70 RR while I was reworking the 340. Amazing for no more than "what it was"

Were all 1967 318's forged crank, or only some?
I would guess that is when both the 318 and 273 cast cranks started being used. An early 318 car might well have a forged crank as the prior forged crank stock was used up; just depends on when the parts got phased in.

did someone say 440 was available in 66 Chrysler and Imperial?

360 was early in Chryslers as well

1967 debut for the 318 LA, however the Poly 318 hung around in trucks much longer. I personally know of a '68 D-500 dump truck with the Poly, all factory, US-built. I think the 273 lasted until 1969, the latest one I saw had hydraulic valve gear (318 LA stuff). The 440 was exclusively luxury car replacement for the 413 that first year ('66), and the 360 was to supplant the 383/400 B in moderate weight big cars and trucks until '74 when the 340 was gone and a HP small block replacement was needed.
