OP, get you one of these. They are an all in one analyzer and invaluable for getting your engine adjusted correctly. I found one of these that came in a kit with a timing light and compression tester for $50 on ebay a few years ago. You might not need all that stuff so search on ebay to find the best price.

Otateral, 850rpm with the car in park was too high. You should be at 750rpm in park and 575-625rpm in gear. I doubt the timing change did much for your deiseling, sounds like it's the lower idle that helped. I'd put your timing back at 10btdc if you weren't pinging and adjust the idle for 750rpm. If you don't get any more deiseling then you should be good. If not, then back it down to 7 or 8btdc and see what happens.
