Whistling sound coming from the carb, right at tip-in ('71 318, Holley 2 Bbl).

Note I did not rebuild the carb. I do have the kit, but figured I'd take a "wait & see" approach.

If it otherwise works correctly, I'd leave it alone. Might just be a slight flaw in the throttle plates causing that whistle right off idle. I never was a fan of that model carb myself.

Roger that. I was going to start spraying some WD-40 around the shaft to see if that would somewhat "seal" any leaks that might originate there, but I ran into something else once she got up to temp.....

I just put the carb back-on about about two/three days ago, after I put the engine in, but I did think of that. No joy.

Anywhoooo, once she got up to temp and I got all of the fluids topped-off, I thought I'd rev it up/"give her the onions" just a little bit, and I'll be damned if she doesn't make a rattling/clacking noise around 2,000 RPM or so from the front of the engine somewhere. Which makes my heart drop.

No video, as I didn't have the heart to continue on, so I'm done for the night, back in the house, and licking my wounds, as it were.

I'd say you're worrying too much. Mine did the same sound with that carb.
Put the aircleaner on and forget about that whistle

Rattle noise could be just a loose alternator bracket etc. Sounds can be a bear to track down.

A Wet belt can sorta "clack/squawk" till dry.

My bad, sorry, when I said base gasket,
I meant the screws up thru the bottom of carb, fastening the base to the body of the carb.
If you grab the top of carb and twist back and forth, it'll likely move on the base, the whistle may disappear till you let go .

"Usually" whistling noises are caused by a vacuum leak between the manifold and carburetor. Sometimes the throttle plate to carburetor screws, too. Something "down low" in relation to the carburetor.

I can't remember a whistle, but sure believe it could, lotsa ones that rattled like crazy .
Pull it outta the cover, or disconnect and plug hose, and listen.
I'm pretty sure that's coming from carb .
Just push, lean your weight on the carb, it'll prob stop or change .

I have had whistling noises from different types of carbs on different engines. While a gasket leak could cause it, there no leaks. I believe the whistle is caused by the air speed & shape of the t/blades & carb body setting up a whistle. Change one factor & the whistle goes way. Like blowing air across a Coke bottle.

Throttle shaft bushings aren't to difficult to do if that's your problem. Only front end rattle I've had before ended up to be the oil slinger. Rattled for some reason after I had just replaced my old timing chain.
