I got a 78 318 put of a Chrysler Lebaron that I'm freshening up for my 67 Dart. I noticed when I took it a part it did not have a windage tray in it and the main cap bolts do not have that part on the head to bolt a tray in.
I noticed someone had been inside that engine before it has .040 pistons. Could that engine have came from the factory with out one? Or who ever rebuilt it before removed it.
I understand what the tray dose for the oil and since this is going to be just a stock rebuild and be a highway cruiser and nothing crazy would it really be worth getting one? I can find a tray easy but what about the main cap bolts that the tray bolts thread into where would I find those?

318's didn't come with windage trays...

    340's did...

You could always install one if you want to... Just get the windage tray and mounting bolt kit...

You don't need it, but if it makes you feel better you can spend hours/days pulling the engine and installing one.

For what its worth, my low 10 second small block doesn't use one...neither did my mid 10 second motor before that...or the 11 second motor before that....or the 13 second motor before that....or the 14 second motor before that........or the 16 second motor before that....or the Fred Flintstones motor before that, lol.

You may see it on a dyno but your seat of the pants dyno will never catch it.

Years ago Mopar Muscle did a dyno test and they concluded that a windage tray was good for over 6,000 rpm.Below that showed no real value.

Because I had an extra windage tray, I installed it in my 273/235 Commando engine going in my 65 Wagon. 20-30 years from now someone who might disassemble the engine will see this and claim all 273/235 Commando motors had a windage tray LOL!

I have the bolts and the tray from 340's. To install it on a 318 you have to use Hemi Head bolt washers under the bolts. I have those also. You don't really need a windage tray on your motor unless you plan on performance add ons. The 360 tray is totally different then a 340 and do not interchange due to the caps.

I gave my last one away to a friend that needed it. Total waste of time and energy rounding up the parts to put one in.

Been said if you run a deep pan..they're not necessary. Crank Scraper wouldn't be a bad idea, or would be a better one.

To clear up the 360 windage tray. There was 3 trays
                      #1 for the 340
                      #2 for the 360
#3 was a later tray with slotted or opened up mounting holes that work on both the 340 & 360

someone at a show once told me the 360 tray was the one to get for a stroker app. Not sure if anything but the bolt spacing was different?

Since the engine didnt come with one I'm not going out of my way to get one. I'm keeping this engine as cheap as possible because it's not going to stay in the car long. I got a gen 3 5.7 I'm going to build the 318 is temporary so the car isnt just sitting not being used

There is one 'hopefully unneeded' benefit..the milodon windage tray i decided to used sure saved my 300.00 something dollar milodon pan when the piston disintegrated and the cylinder wall shattered. Looked like it was shot at.
