I broke the mounting area off a small block Chevy in the 80s, brought it to a machine shop and they sent it out to a specialist who welded cast iron, worked fine.

@rustyratrod read more and more on muggy weld but would be I'm assuming the 77 electrode ???

Could have a shop build the area up with spray weld. There are ALOT of options, just a matter of what you want to spend.

If there was space between casting ear and mount, that could have caused the break. Shim any gaps with washers to prevent bending then breaking of ears.

I too voted weld - some time back I as well had a chebie block crack at the starter mount area.
The same machine shop that prep'd the block welded and re-tapped.

Dont worry about it, just use the other 2 or 3 good lugs on that side...?

I would not try to weld the broken piece back on. I would build the mount lug back up, re-drill and grind back to shape.

Have you ever tried to drill/grind on a weld???? :violent1:

I vote weld it. Heat the parts up cherry red and weld with a 7018 then keep the heat on it and decrease it slowly. I've done it many times with great results

Anyone ever used a torque strap???

@pishta ya they're fine it's driver side not to mention

Sorry I missed this. I think the 72 might be better. I have done manifolds with the 72 and it worked great. Call them and see what they say. It's important enough for a phone call.

I used to weld cast all the time. NICKLE ROD! You can machine it after it is welded.

Any welding or machine shop should be able to do it for less than the cost of a pack of welding rod. Nickle is a little pricey.

Weld it. We have done it many times to save old 340 blocks like this one.
