4 speed od or 5 speed

McLeod's box will be out anytime now for Mopars. I emailed them and they said you need a Turbo 400 spline sized output yoke and fab a motor mount cross member. Otherwise should be a drop in if you currently have a manual trans, floor shift car.
Granted it's rated less (500ft/lbs) than the Passon (700ft/lbs)box but is also only $2800 -vs- $4k.

I had a Dakota with a 5-speed that I put over 100K miles on it.
The trans is not that bad, it is like about any other 5-speed truck / Jeep transmission.
Plus it is already set up for a hydraulic clutch.
The easiest thing to do is go out on a car lot and test drive a vehicle like the one the trans come out of, see if you like the gear spread.
If you cannot find a Dakota to test drive, alot of jeep wranglers from about 1999 to 2006 have about the same ratios, plenty of them sitting on car lots.
Only you can decide if you like the gear ratios.
 
Those McLeod ratios are pretty sweet.
2.95-1.94-1.34-1.00-.63............ the %splits are 66-69-75-.63
That makes a nice tight 3-4 shift to help a little engine pull some mph.
My combo runs 3.09-1.92-1.40-1.09-.78... And the %splits are 62-73-78-72. This is dynamite spits.I think the McLeod is a close second, and their O/D is a hair better.
With the Mcleod box;
To run the eighth and trap at 6500@93mph requires about 4.30s out back.It would trap at the top of third gear. 4.30s x .63-O/D makes a nice 2.71 highway gear, and 4.30 x 2.95 makes a nice 12.69 starter gear.The starter gear is well suited to a 3.31 stroke engine, and, I love it. If you do the math on this gearset this is what it looks like with 4.30s; 12.69-8.34-5.76-4.30-2.71.
With my set-up;
The 833/GV,which is very satisfying, would be with 4.11s to match 3rd gears, and looks like this; 12.70-7.89-5.75-4.48-3.21
I would almost swap my GV for this in a heart beat. Had it been available in 99 I would have purchased it instead of the GV. As a bonus it puts the stick high,and back, between the buckets, where mine already is.And the 500ftlbs is generous enough for a street SBM. Coming in spring 2016,eh? Hmmmmm
Let's see, I'M currently running 3.55s so my starter gear is 10.97 which I like a lot. With a 2.95 first I would run a 3.73 chunk, for a starter gear of 11.00(nice), and the O/D would be 2.35, SWEET.That would make 65mph into1900rpm. I just love it. Anybody out there want a GearVendor?

Part of my problem is finding the exact gear ratio / year. I posted some pictures of the numbers. Does anyone know where I can find it?

So it came out of a Dakota and that's all you know? So you don't even know if it works well or anything? And now you're willing to hack your car all up to make it work and you literally know nothing about the transmission?
 
I disagree with some of the comments about the dakota trans. For instance, if you're swapping in an AX15 trans (I realize that's not what you have) you don't have to modify the floor itself at all. Yes you need to notch the upper crossmember a little to clear the shifter but not much. Also, as far as the gear ratios go, I was playing around with an online gear ratio calculator and with a 3.08 gear (I'm gonna run an 8.8 rearend) and a 295/45/18 I will have the same take off as a 904 with 4.10s and 205/75/14s, PLUS cruise at 70mph at 2000rpm.

Well there we go. Those ratios present %splits of 61-62-70-79. What that means is; what ever you rev the engine to in each gear, the rpms will fall to that %.
So say you rev 1st to 5000 rpm.; then it will drop into 2nd at .61 x 5000 = 3050. and coming out of 2nd at 5000, will enter 3rd at .62 x 5000 = 3100. and coming out of 3rd at 5000,will enter 4th at .70 x 5000 = 3500. and coming out of 4th, will enter 5th at .79 x 5000 = 3950. That's a fairly nice progression. You get two fairly wide splits to get moving, and two progressively tighter splits to help you trap well. This would work well with 2. 94s or even less. The starter gear would be 2.94 x 3.83 =11.26 a great teener gear, and O/D would come in at 2.94 x .79 = 2.32 a fabulous O/D, bringing your hi-way revs to about 1900 rpm@ 65 mph. Again, great for a teener.
All-in-all, a pretty good deal. Especially for a smaller engine with plenty of torque but perhaps a limited amount of top end power.Just like a teener! If it can handle your teener, it could be pretty sweet.If it could handle 440 ftlbs, I'd be out shopping.
 
There's no definite torque rating on these transmissions. Some ppl claim they won't hold up to any torque but I know of 2 guys runnin em behind gen3 hemis and not taking it easy on em and they're holdin up just fine. I think it'll live just fine behind my stock 5.9 magnum.
 
No idea. I myself never knew anything about these trans missions till 1-2 years ago but I'm only 21 and never messed with Dakotas or jeeps. I'd say bang for buck on a stock/mild small block these could be about the best 5 speed swap out there. But I'll know more once I get mine in.... Also, you can buy short throw shifters for these to help take away the "shifts like a truck" feel. The short throw also has the hurst bolt pattern so a factory 4 speed shifter or pistol grip will bolt right up! :D

The McLeod Racing Muscle Car 5 Speed is based on the Mopar A833 case design so it will be small and compact for little to no tunnel modification.

The 5 speed comes with 8620 forged gear sets with the following gear ratio. 1st 2.95 2nd 1.99 3rd 1.34 4th 1.00 5th .63 along with a 32 spline output shaft.

The same as a turbo 400 or a super t-10.

The transmission does not fit the factory cross members, so that is one thing you'll need to figure out.

We are currently only offering for GM applications at this time. We will come out with Mopar applications Late 2015 or Early 2016.

The part number for the Mopar is 542957 and preliminary costs are set at $2795.00 plus shipping.

I have also attached a dimensions chart of the transmission for your review.

So did anyone figure what the OP had? Other than its from a Dakota and a 5 speed.

Closest thing I can find is its an A535 from 87-92
 
The AX15 isn't a secret, I know of at least one guy on here that used one, and several on other forums. The other transmissions to look at are the R154, AR5 or MA5. They are all of an Aisin design and bolt into a Dakota bellhousing. Rated torque is pretty low, but there are plenty of stories of these transmissions surviving just fine behind higher hp motors (an LS7 swapped Soltice, for one).
 
Just to point out again, the transmission the OP has and originally asked about and the one I was previously talking about is NOT an AX15.

The R154 is the way to go for that family of transmissions, it came factory in Supra's and has been proven to work with some pretty significant HP/torque ratings even in stock form. And of course there are a ton of aftermarket parts available for them because of the Supra tuner application. Very little tunnel mods (if any) are needed for the R154, and you just have to find the right V8 Dakota bellhousing. I think some custom work is needed to make the input shaft bearing work with the small block crank register, and you need to covert over to a hydraulic clutch.

While this is actually on a Brit sportscar forum, there's actually quite a bit of info in this thread about what's needed to put the R154 behind a SBM.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to disagree. On the '63 Valiant that I was working on to put my R154 in, it required a new crossmember just like the T56 swaps do. Maybe not as much work in the tunnel up by the bellhousing, but still a fair amount of cutting. Just an FYI.
 
Since we're off track and on this discussion, I agree with furyus on the T5.

After many installations and experiencing several TKOs, I can say its the biggest piece of #*$% on the market. I'd do one of 3 things, 4 speed and highway gears (my poor mans OD), t5 for non abusive situations and a T56 as the ultimate, knowing the degree of fab necessary.

I've always thought a 3.09 gear 4 speed with something like a 2.94 axle ratio would make for a good setup. Pretty sure that works out to almost exactly what Passion's Hemi Overdrive would be like with a 3.55. But I assume you are referring to a 2.66 gear 4 speed, correct?

What about a TR-3550? Better strength and it bolts to the same QT bell as a T5.

T56 as the ultimate, knowing the degree of fab necessary.

Can't argue. If you are going to do it and do it right, T56 wins.

One thought I would add, the R154 hasn't been the best for Buschi on the drag strip. Worked fine on a road course, but didn't shift well enough to do well on the strip. At least that is what I remember him saying.

Doesn't even need to be a V8 dakota. The V6s have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. I got all my stuff out of a 90 or 92 v6 dakota and it bolts right up to a SBM I have the flywheel, mini starter and bell bolted to my 318 to get it running but needed to buy a 5.9 flywheel to swap in my 5.9 magnum since V6s are balanced same as 318/5.2s
 
the dakota trans is bolted on to the bell housing from the inside so it has to be installed assembled,,,it is also set up for a hyd set up,the easyist way is to get the pedal assembly out of the dakota, that way all the hyd stuff is a bolt in and off the shelf parts I recently tossed a dakota assembly I had planed on using but changed my mind its an easy set up,,,
