Wi-Fi device detection

Possibly. But the barn in question has no windows and I climbed all over the roof today, there’s not evidence of solar panels
If he is as skilled as you believe, then it may be extremely difficult to find. He had lots of time to plan and disguise whatever it is that he planted on your property.
Be careful not to overlook the obvious things and places that something can be hidden in plain sight.
Good luck.

This sounds like-

A- an awful lot of trouble for someone to go through just to thumb their nose at someone.

B- an advanced skill set for someone who can't find a job.

C- a waste of resources if they've left a device on your property, especially if they have no income stream.

D- it may not even be on your property.

Ok. So. Your phone would not register a network if it were blocked from the signal no? Can you make a small "faraday" screen, for lack of a better term, and stand in an area of the barn and "block" your way towards signal.

Does that make sense?

Walk around the area you suspect the device to be and take a map. Mark the signal strength at various points as you walk around. You you should be able to get very close to locating the spot.

In addition, I used to use a software package (on linux systems) called kismet. Not all wifi networks advertise there SSID, so you're lucky you can see what you can. Kismet would grab ALL wifi packets and find the SSID. It was a great tool.

Actaully, it appears kismet is still around

I had it on an iPac, running debian linux with an orinoco pcmcia wireless card. I used it to map every wireless network transmitting packets across the university I worked at. Very useful tool.

Some devices broadcast their own and aren't necessarily connected to anything else.

Wireless printers come to mind. They broadcast an unsecured SSID so you can connect to them and install the drivers via that connection.

I think it is time to ask the question "what is his purpose?"

We know the guy doesn't like you, and he may have an axe to grind with you

We know he is tech savvy, but is he vindictive?

Is his main goal to annoy you, or is he waiting for you to check your bank account online so he can steal your log in information and make you pay?

I think it’s more he’s stalking than anything. Should have seen the stack of pictures the court threw out that he had. He took stills of everything we did across the entire farm for over a year

If you want to get really hi tech, build one of those directional antennas out of a pringles can and do a strength check with it form three or four different spots. You'll be able to triangulate it's position pretty well.

WTF was the purpose of that?

What did the legal team say was the claim associated with the pictures?

The device broadcasting the SSID could be a camera, and could still be snapping pics and storing them for the perp to retrieve when they drive by.

You have their name and info in case another trip to the courthouse is necessary?

They could also be "squatting" nearby, perhaps on a neighbor's property.

I agree, there are tools available designed to root out "rouge" wireless and network equipment.

Not sure if it's applicable to your situation but the last one I used was "Wireshark", and even though I used it "on the wire", I believe it is wireless capable.

That's been a decade ago, though.

Sadly I do . He is related…

Well if you do find the device/cameras, the bright side is there might be a little fun in it for you before destroying it. Nothing comes to mind right now but leave it up to FABO and you will have many ideas soon.

I feel that the amount of money this must have already cost, some of that detection equipment is cheap in comparison, and well worth the peace of mind.

What a cluster. I do understand you leaving that info (being related) out until now, because the conversation goes away from your goal on finding the source of the voices and moves to giving this fella his comeuppins.

Id be on my guard
"One in the pipe and safety off" level of on my guard

I understand you know this fellow better then i do, but be cautious

Weve all seen enough episodes of dateline to know this can escalate quickly and "stalking" is often where it starts

Especially if there is a perceived gripe, and if he hold you accountable for him being out of a home...
Just be carefull is what I'm saying

What is the beef with the relative, and why does he want to do the surveillance on you? Does he feel belittled at family gatherings?

Did you rub him the wrong way, or is he jealous of your success being you own a farm and he does not ???

Well it’s a long long story but the latter is partially true.

He's a relative.
You can find him, or someone who you might not know can find him.
Break both knees, left elbow and right hand in 3 places.
Not a threat of death, just some pain.
I could not deal with someone stalking me, much less my wife. Broken bones everywhere.
Crooked people are everywhere these days, hire one. Quietly. On another property, not around your car or phone.
No one else has said this as it is apparently not the sensible thing to do.
When dealing with crazies often times the sane must act like the crazy.
My 2 cents.
