just acquired my first sb mopar (360 la) bought the distributor and it was minus a gear.
With that being said every one that I have looked at online is minus a gear.
Obviously I am missing something. What gear do I need an where do I acquire this item
Thanks I know it’s a noob question

mopar distributors do not use a gear, they were driven by a slot in the intermediate shaft.....looks a little bit like a big flat screwdriver and the counterpart. The intermediate shaft or oil pump drive does have the gear.

The end of the distributor will have a tang on the end

That fits into the intermediate shaft

Which has a hex on it’s bottom that fits into the oil pump

No gear is used - like on a slant

Does the intermediate shaft come in the built engine or do I have to get one

it should already be in there....it connects the oil pump and the cam (pump is driven by camshaft). Watch inside the distributor hole for it.

So if I’m understanding this correctly. And please correct me if I’m wrong. The flat tang on the distributor fits in th already installed intermediate shaft. There should be only two ways to put it in, right or 180 degrees wrong.

I don't know why you would assume that LOL

The distributor yes.
The intermediate shaft, no. The feared shaft will fit in on any position. When installing the intermediate shaft into the engine, after the cam shaft is in, the distributor can be 180* out of sync.

You want the rotor tip to point to the number 1 piston. Most forward to the nose of the car drivers side.

An excellent book to have on tap is the “How to Rebuild or How to hot rod your small block Chrysler.”

These (Ether book) are excellent to rebuild your engine from.
Extremely recommend book to own, read and rebuild from and always have on tap.
