318 cam suggestions

Lunati makes a great 268 grind that I would consider to be a hot rod street cam.

I don’t know my exact compression ratio because I’m not 100% sure of my deck height. I cannot remember if it was taken down at the machine shop when I had it bored over. But based on my inputs to summits CR calculator it should be anywhere from 9.5-10.2:1

I’m almost positive the rear end already has 3.23. I’m learning that going with a 2000 stall when having the transmission rebuilt was possibly a mistake.
2000 stall is stock would work with a mild cam, but a mild cam might be too much with your possible cr to run on pump gas, meaning you might need to run a fair size cam which will want more stall and gears.
Even a fairly mild cam would benefit more stall and gears in a 318.

You're gonna want more than a 2000 stall. That's gonna suck. You'll be happier with something in the 3200-3600 range. Converter technology is nothing like it was 30 years ago. Now you can get a converter that'll stall 5000 RPM but drive around on the street and be very docile.

I'd want to go with at least 3.91 gears with a decent 318, but probably could live with 3.55 depending on tire size. Smaller engines operate at higher rpm's and make less torque needing deeper gears to run well.

Rear tires are 225/70-14. I’m running stock steel rims. Guess I’ll look into upgrading torque converter and rear gears.

If that's the case you could go with a fairly strong cam, I'd be looking at xe268h or xe275h or similar by other companies depending on CR stall and gear choices.

I was looking at the Howard 718001-09 which is pretty similar just has a much higher rated stall.

Here we go again, another 318 cam thread and the guys that know a lot are giving their opinions. All good until their ego's get in the way and the thread takes a turn. To the op, read through the dozens of threads already written on the subject and compile your information. Contact some cam manufacturers and see what they recommend. They have chosen cams for thousands of 318's and probably know what works better than guys like me that haven't swapped cams in a 318 to know what they are talking about. Like many here, I can only offer my recommendation and opinion with no practical knowledge. I either close this thread now or do so after the fire flies. Now is the best time.
