In my elderly opinion I think the pins mainly located the rear end and the major amount of the retention is through the clamping force of the u bolts. They supply a bit of retention but not the bulk of it.

Yeah that looks like a good grind. We use Gaterman lifters and I think that the Howard hyd roller lifters are sourced from Gaterman so they should be okay. OP will need to make sure his valve springs match the new camshaft.

I did not do that. Are you saying that while the sure grip is not bolted to the housing, to insert both axles? Does the sure grip have to completely come back out of the housing?

Before you bolted the case halves together did you insert axles into the sides of the sure grip to line up both of the side gears?

When I replace U-joints, I always seat them by driving the cups outward so the clip fit tight against the driveshaft ears. To do that, I use a vice as an anvil. Open the jaws until it's the right width to catch both ears on one plane and smack the driveshaft with a rubber mallet right on the end...

Even after taking the passenger side axle completely out, the driver side won't go in anymore than what was shown in the pictures.
