SCORE!!! My 340 was delivered to my driveway! Actually, my friend Syl scored this mill from another guy and passed it on to me for a very nice price. 1972 virgin 340 block with J-heads. All cylinders cleaned up very nice with only a small lip at the tops.

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Thanks! Also, LOVE your cat pic! Actually, the "graveyard" you see the Demon in belongs to me and an old friend. The earlier shot from the truck is at Stephens Performance in north Alabama... http://www.stephensperformance.com/ I'll add a few shots of my graveyard...

Thanks guys for the remarks! Also, Jim, this is a link to the site that I built my rotisserie from: http://www.mts.net/~hpokrant/Restoration_Tips/1-Rotisserie/Rotisserie.htm As for the DP on POR-15 feathered edges, I did not notice any problems with the paint leveling out. As with any paint...

Test fit of the panel...it fits like a freakin' glove! I am extremely happy with this AMD product and plan to buy the front valance that has just been released. ALERT...:stop:...I just picked up ANOTHER PROJECT!!!!!

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

I got the call!....Stephens Performance called and the AMD full qtr panel is in! I jump in the truck and head to the Alabama line. The first pic is a quick snap of his massive Mopar Graveyard! I would have stopped and taken a few more pix BUT, there were several tornado watches developing so I...

Well, wheel wells need to be wider! Again, since my quarter panel is in transit, the wait has caused the mind to wander...Since the filler panel is off, access to the tubs is greatly increased. This is really not that difficult, just pay attention and move at a slow pace.

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Once the filler panel was cut out, my plans have changed again!.... Since I have so much access to the trunk area, why not mini-tub? Let's do it!

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Now it's on to the filler panel. I hate to see a '70 dart chopped up BUT this donor hailed from Boston until about 10 years ago. It made the move to south Memphis from which I found it on Craigslist. The entire bottom was rusted beyond belief! Even the torsion bar cross frame had rusted out...

Going, going,....GONE! Very solid top with only a couple of minor dents.

More metal prepping, POR-15'ing and priming.

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Ahhh....straightening quarter panels! The upper body molding holes were previously welded shut...the rocker molding holes were just bondoed. Also, note the few small low spots where the green paint remains. Not bad BUT the area above the wheel opening has been slightly dented, of which will...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

It on to the engine bay! Down to the metal and then a few coats of DP-40. No rust damage at the battery tray area...nice!...a little POR-15 wont hurt.

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Again, POR-15 was applied to the "low areas" inside the body. Also, the POR-15 needs to be tacky in order for paint to adhere, so I went ahead and shot primer on the painted areas. Instead of DP, I used K36 high build primer. The idea is that K36 will be a lot easier to prep for paint at a much...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

No sooner than the paint was dry on the bottom, I started prepping the inside surfaces for paint. This was last October, the weather was wonderful and I had taken the week off to get a big jump on the restoration.
  18. DartfulDodger

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

....and while the POR-15 was still tacky, I began "jambing" all of the hard to reach areas prior to full on spray with PPG DP-40 Primer. The PPG is expensive BUT it sure is tough stuff and lays on like butter. The '66 Belvedere you see in some of the pix has DP-40 on the roof and in the...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Again, thanks for the kind words. And Racingduster, I am guilty of burning out around Christmas '09 until about 2 months ago! I just didn't enjoy working during the cold months with my garage door closed...my shop area is ONLY 10 by 22! Fourspeed, I'm sure your right about the bad stuff...I...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

I broke down and took a chance on the illustrious "China Freight" Sand Blaster unit...150 bucks I think....and aluminum oxide media. My old air compressor was long overdue being replaced, so fortunately, a friend of mine was selling his 2-stage 5 horse, 80 gallon tank...$400! The blaster did...

Removal of rubberized undercoating...a breeze when standing up! I've done my time on my back, cold concrete floor and face full of dirt and hot rubber...never again!

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Once the rearend and front suspension and K-frame came off, visual inspection shows how solid the bottom side of the dart is. Trunk extensions are perfect! Plans are to remove all rubberized undercoating.

    66 Cuda...$$$???

How much should I offer on this 66? Here's the deal...I don't want it BUT, one of my friends has a valiant wagon(actually, two of them), that I'm dying to get. The thing is my friend will only trade for other mopars...reasonable cash will not get it. I feel that he would trade even with...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Now is as good of time as any to build a rotisserie. Since the new qtr panel is a few weeks away, I decided to stoke up the ol' Miller and weld up what has become one of the most invaluable tools in my arsenal. I believe materials ran about $300. I had some extra DP40 and DP76 in the paint...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Trouble brewing... Well, the rust has migrated south! The top of the qtr panel at the C pillar, where the original vinyl top was, has the same cancer as the roof had. Also, the filler panel along the glass channel is pot marked with the same pits and holes. Also, the right qtr panel is...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

Thanks for all the comments...I'll keep it coming! Like I mentioned above, the A and C pillars fell right in place. Notice the spot welds were cut out on the C. Those spot weld cutters are great. As for the A pillars, I joined the upper and lower sections at the factory seam...it was...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

The right side A-pillar was wasted...so I just sectioned in rust free metal from the donor. This was actually pretty easy. As for setting the roof in place, this thing is heavy! I was however, amazed at how easy it fell right into place. In order to make up the 1/16th inch "drop" in the door...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

NEVER FEAR...DONOR CAR is here!!! The rusted out roof had to go! I took a lot of structural measurements to ensure the body retains the proper dimensions. Once the top came off, the distance between the door jamb post and the hinge post moved barely a 1/16th of an inch, with NO bracing! I...

    1971 Dart 340 Six Pack

RUST MONSTER STRIKES!!!...I was so keyed in on how solid the bottom side of the Dart was, I didn't think about the top side. The curse of the vinyl top rears its' ugly head. When the headliner was removed, a whole mess of bondo ooze was hanging from the roof. This is bad news...
