340 six pack crank and rods?

Longgone, probably "old timers" disease. (he's been known to pull on a jug a little also, one good thing about owning your own shop) I've got a bad case of CRS and CFS anymore. I can't remember what it is or where I put it, spend more time looking for a part than fixing something.

340 six pack crank and rods?

Yeah Mike, he works on everything. Had a couple big diesel engines tore down when I was there. He's been doing this for about 50 yrs. now, when the big machine shop he was running closed down he and his Son opened a small place near their home. It ain't nothin' fancy, but he's always taken care...

    318 build up

    Here's a good article on a 318 build http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/mopar/0667em_mopar_318_engine/index.html Another one: http://www.compcams.com/Community/Articles/Details.asp?ID=-360770234

    318 build up

Talked to a guy at the track today that had a built 318 in a duster, he was running mid 7's in the 1/8 with it. He said that he had sonic checked the block and bored it all it would take, was running the aeroheads with 1.88 valves ported but with the stock valve springs that came with the heads...

340 six pack crank and rods?

Thanks Tony, that's what I thought but didn't want to say anything till I was sure. Guess the old guy has gotten to close to the cleaning solvent. He's a great machinist but like me is showing his age, I'm 60 now and he has a few years on me.

340 six pack crank and rods?

I bought a bunch of junk off a guy last week that included a 340 crank and rods that have a tag on them that says 340 six pack. My machinist said that he thought the six pack rods were slightly longer than a standard 340. Anyone ever hear of this? Seven of the rods are within one gram of each...

    360 build or 340???

Like the guy's have said 340 is great if you can find one you can afford. But if something should happen to it trying to find another could be a big problem. If you build the 360 and throw a rod, another block won't break the bank.

Decent rate for head machine work?

That's not out of line, but check a couple more shops around. And check with some folks that have used the shops and see if they recommend them. I had a local shop do some heads for me years ago that put in two bent valves. Luckily I did a leak down test on the engine when I put the heads on and...

    Removing SB intermediate shaft??

Changed oil and filter and cranked it over quite a bit, no oil to the rockers. Think I'm going to go ahead and pull the motor, the pickup is probably clogged with sludge. It was going to have to come out eventually for the big block.

Fuel pump is 10-7, going to see what happens tomorrow.

    Removing SB intermediate shaft??

Got the new starter on it and cranked it over, has compression on all cylinders. Taking a break for supper, going back down and see if the fuel pump will work. If it does might try to get it started tonite.

    Removing SB intermediate shaft??

Yeah, I don't think it can hurt it anymore than it already is. The old starter is Toast, spent all afternoon unbolting the headers and snaking it out from between the tubes. It's all coming back to me now, unbolt headers, remove bolts from starter, turn the steering all the way to the right...

    Removing SB intermediate shaft??

Was going to try to pre-lube it before starting, but it's beginning to look like I'm beating a dead horse. Someone spent a little money on it, has a new edelbrock intake and set of headers. When I pulled the new chrome valve covers I saw the baked on crud under the new orange paint. It was...

    Removing SB intermediate shaft??

Ramcharger, you are correct. It is still in the car and has a bunch of baked on crap in it. That's what I've been doing, soaking, twisting and pulling. I'm at the point now that I can't get anything under the gear due to it's OD and the ID of the dist. hole. Wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing...

    Removing SB intermediate shaft??

I've got an intermediate shaft on an old 273 that is stuck. I've soaked it in Marvel Mystery oil, made a puller to catch under the gear and got it almost all the way to the top. I suspect there is crap on the shaft that is getting bigger as I slide it further up. Can't get the puller on the gear...

    Big block weight reduction?

Thanks Demon, haven't fooled with 440's much but lost over 100# going with aluminum heads, intake and water pump on the 428 FE I put in my old Model A coupe. Looks like about the same for the Mopar, it could use a diet. Bent the bolts on my engine stand...

    Big block weight reduction?

I did a search and found that a stock 440 weighs about 670#, but didn't find the weight of a 440 with aluminum water pump and housing, aluminum intake, heads and headers. Anyone know about how much weight you'd loose? TIA
