Are all 340 blocks the same?

The last thing in the world I would do is spend lots of money on a combo then skimp on something as critical as the clutch.

Thank you everyone for the input. Very helpful, I appreciate it!

Are all 340 blocks the same?

The car also has very good frame connectors that are notched into the rear frame and floors and are 100% welded in and a five point chrome moly roll bar. The suspension is completely rebuilt and there are Wilwwod discs on all four corners. Its well suited for a small block four speed setup.

Are all 340 blocks the same?

Well I'd love to go road racing but lets face it, road racing is for rich guys and I'm not rich. I hardly consider drag racing boring either. In fact I've loved drag racing since I first saw it on TV in the late 60s. As far as the driveline I already have a rear axle that is more than up to it...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

I think its a viable package. Even if it failed to make 600 hp and say came in somewhere between 550 and 575, it would still be very fun to race. To be frank I've come to the conclusion that drag racing automatics is boring unless you can afford enough power where its difficult to even get it...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

Yes there are lots of talented shops down here, the trouble is its mainly Ford and Chevy builders. I'm not seeing a whole lot of Mopar action down here like back in the Northeast. I'll be willing to work with a shop that's within two hours driving distance and I'll only go to a shop that really...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

My car has a 440 with about 575 hp and automatic trans in it now. The plan has always been to build different combos for the car and at this point I want a small block/four speed combo.

Are all 340 blocks the same?

OK, so the mains are not the problem area. I'm not using 4" stoke. I'll likely be going with a brand new forged crank with 3.58" stroke. The plan is to not build a small block that runs like a big block. I don't need or want a big fat torque curve or low end torque with this engine. I'm not...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

I know I read somewhere that the 340 block can handle considerably more power than the 360 block. Are you guys telling me that is false information?

Are all 340 blocks the same?

I may wind up using a 360 block but I'm definitely going to be looking for a 340 block first. No rush. Not looking for a complete engine, going to be building piece by piece and the only factory part I would be using will be the block, accessory brackets and timing cover. No need to haul home a...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

The 340 has smaller mains on the crank. This is an assumption but that means more meat in the mains in the block so doesn't that mean more strength in the block? Also slower bearing speeds in the bearings. I have read that the 340 block is stronger and can handle more power. Is that false? I'm...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

The T/A block would be great but I'm sure the cost would be a deal breaker, I would shell out the bucks for a race block if I could afford it. I'm reasonably sure I will exceed the limits with a 360 block, that's why I'd rather have a 340 block, I'm not going 340 block for the bore. I have seen...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

Yes I'm one town north of Mooresville. I have not been to any of the shops, too busy getting established at this point. I have seen lots of drag racing though. Lots of 1/8 mile tracks close by so its not the long drive I had back in CT. I ran my Duster at Mooresville once when I first brought it...

Are all 340 blocks the same?

OK, I know its probably been discussed but I did a search and could not find the info. Anyway with that said I'd like to know if all 340 blocks are the same or if there's a particular casting number or year that's better or is there any years to avoid. I'm planning a small block build and I'm...

I've never heard that zinc eats horse power. Can you elaborate further?

    Chet Herbert Roller

I can't help you with the specs. I can say this. I've run Herbert cams twice. One was a solid roller in a big block Chevy and the other was a flat hydraulic in a Pontiac. Both ran very good and there were no quality issues or failures with either of them. I was a little concerned because the...

Why are 318's low HP and torque?

I did not read the entire thread but I did read enough to see all kinds of ways to try and get good power out of a 318. IMO there are only a hand full of good reasons to get involved in a 318. 1) You live in a remote area and finding a 360 is too difficult. 2) You are wanting to build only...

Last ditch effort for used 318

I see a bunch of things that all ad up to poor off idle/low end torque but the one thing that grabs my attention the most are 1 7/8 headers. Those are too big for your engine. 1 5/8 would help solve the problem.

What 340 block? If I had one I would use it.

Power limits of stock 360 block and crank.

Oh I see. Yup Mallory metal is not cheap. Is your crank stock stroke or a stroker? If I do build this engine I will be using light pistons and rods no heavier than they need to be so I think I won't need any heavy metal to intarnally balance it.
  22. Doosterfy

Power limits of stock 360 block and crank.

I think you're missing my point. I'm not arguing that the 360 is a better or more durable engine than a 340, I'm saying that I like 360s better. If 340 cores were cheap and easy to find then I would likely go that route. Also realize that with the heads I'm talking about using I probably will...

Power limits of stock 360 block and crank.

Good point as usual moper. I definately don't want race heads or a stroker crank. I'm thinking with the compression I'm talking it would be able to run on pump gas. Just a common sense engine that uses the stock block and crank to their fullest potential with out going crazy on anything. If the...

Power limits of stock 360 block and crank.

I ave a 440 in the car now. It runs mid 11s@116 and is 100% streetable. Pump gas no power adders. You can see it on YouTube, my channel is Doosterfy. I'm going to be building more engines and using different transmissions and I want a stock stroke 360 in my engine collection. I always loved 360s.

So with some beefing we're talking about 600 and without the mods around 500. Thanks, that's what I figured.

Power limits of stock 360 block and crank.

I want to run as much power as the stock block and crank will take and that's it. Not looking to build a super high power engine. I'm pretty sure I can reach the limiting power levels without going to race heads. I'm figuring ported Eddy RPMs or possibly the new Indy T/A heads and around 11.5 or...
