Recently put a 4 speed OD unit behind my 318. Using a late model Ram starter, which now makes a grinding noise because it is too close to the flywheel. Is there a spacer out there to put between the starter and the bellhousing to cure it?

Any video of noise? Is there any roughness of the engine associated with the noise?

Update: been a couple weeks with a couple hundred more miles of driving under the belt. Noise still gone

210-215 hp @ rear wheels with that smaller cam. 320-325 ft-lbs of torque at the crank. It should run nicely in an A body have good low end twist.

Well I tried swapping the balancer, and while it was worn, it did not cure the noise. I also checked for excessive timing chain slack, and there really is none. I did take the stethoscope and listened on every header tube and sure enough, the front tube on right side, or cylinder #2, the noise...

Could be the slinger. I think I'm going to swap to a new balancer. The current one has about 200,000 miles on it and wasn't replaced at the last rebuild 8 years ago. I will look at the bottom timing cover seal to see if it's dried out and maybe contributing to the noise.

I have yes. In fact, I removed all of them. The alternator was replaced a few months after the noise began. I'm starting to question of maybe there is something rubbing on the front of the timing cover behind the balancer.

Update on this: Still trying to find the source, all the while I have put another 700 miles on the car with no change in sound, running, or oil pressure. This included a 300 mile roundtrip about a week ago averaging 17 miles to the gallon mixed. I changed the oil after and it was clean with no...

Shut it down at 1700 rpm and heard the noise spool down with the engine as it ramped down

Pretty sure I've noticed it quiet substantially or not be present at all if I shut down between 1200-1500 rpm. Will verify tomorrow.

Yeah I know...it's hard to hear unless right around the car in person. Through the exhaust rattle and typical exhaust note, it's there. Thought about the pickup but wouldn't oil pressure be way down? I'll try to fab a stethoscope tomorrow.

Yep, the squeak is it, not the rattle. Comes and goes oddly. Sounds like a bearing, but just have a hard time believing it's in the main bearings..Maybe the thrust bearing. Just hasn't gotten much worse over the past 6 months. And no, can't really tell a difference when the clutch is in. Seems...

The key jangling sound is from one of the Ultra Flo mufflers. Something has been loose in there for a while. The video isn’t too great. I will see if I can improve on that later today by crawling underneath the car. I am absolutely positive the noise is coming from the rear half of the engine...

Good suggestion but tried a new starter a while ago. No change.

Not ruling out….Just seems lower in engine than that, but definitely in the rear.

Could swap back in one of my spare distributors to double check. Put an FBO unit it about a year and a half ago, just before the noise started occurring.

Dust cover not there. Wasn't on the 904 before the 4-speed swap either. the noise was occurring with the 904 in the car as well.

I couldn't see how. Not characteristic of a noise it would make. Seems to be originating from lower than that.

Checked on oil today. All looks good color and cleanliness wise still and no usage.

Noticed today that the noise didn't begin until a few minutes after start up and driving for a block or two. Also, if it idles for a minute or two, the noise goes away.

Thinking it's possible. Just surprised that drive ability has not changed whatsoever in the year or so that it has been making the noise.

This was recently converted over to 4 speed. The same noise was heard long before the 4 speed went in, with the 904. Clutch depress doesn't have much effect on things. Will come and go and will quiet or go away if it is left idling for a few minutes.
