    Headers

I had TTi coat my set. They looked great right out of the box (and actually still look good today) but on engine break-in I did not adjust the timing soon enough and the heat (it seems) was too much for one header (which blushed the silver coating on a tube or two). There is a break-in for the...

    Small Block Showroom!

This thread is great. Such a fantastic bunch of photos of great work. My photo is from back in the day when I swapped out my 360 for a new seasoned block 408. Eddy port matched heads to an air-gap with a Holley Dom 850, small spray and some TTi big tube long collector headers. Keep the...

    Performer RPM Magnum heads?

Just for kicks I want to say that I went with Eddie Performer RPM Magnum heads on my 408 stroker. I had them cleaned up (out of the box) and port matched to my LA airgap intake by Hughes (who also drilled them to take the LA intake). I went with a version of the GM rocker at a Magnum ratio of...

Does A Big CI Stroked SB get to a point where It is hard to keep cool?

My 408 (590HP) got a four core Champion radiator, dual electric fans and Stay Frosty coolant. That keeps it at 190 ~ when the fans are on.

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

Its alright gents. I like what I have, so I will try to optimize before I swap stuff. I will strap it to a chassis dyno & tune on it a bit, then back to the track with all I need for additional tuning. Remember that from the start I said that I was still breaking it in, and did three mild pulls...

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

Nah I did not put any juice to it with the cast crank. 'Fraid to! Alright, I think I will start there. Enough of us are thinking "tune" so let me tinker without swapping parts 1st. As far as cold air... That is the car in my profile pic. Hemi hood scoop right to air intake. I think its getting...

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

Nope. Considered those but simply ordered Eddie Magnum small chambers and told Hughes to clean them up out of the box. They got me an airgap then suggested polish & deep porting to match 'em up. That fit my budget.

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

I think it should too. I figured I was on the right track. Thank you. Its light. I have not spent a lot of time on the tune. I was just getting warmed up and breaking it in taking it easier with 90% hits. Yes, that is right. I was planning on a full RPM run after a few more passes and a...

Even the Magnum version? Heck I picked that one myself. I WAS pretty proud of that! TCI Super Street Fighter 3500 stall converter

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

Alright sir. I like that manifold so that works for me. Going strictly by my brain recall - 3rd @ 5300RPM. I do not have that port data. We casually had a number but I did not gather a chart. Bigger cam would be a easy upgrade. But keep in mind that I am running a 1.6 ratio (magnum) rocker...

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

Yeah... That was ordered moons ago without enough research. Sorry! Plans were to upgrade to a forged Scat or something... With that said that is the reason why I am asking for other thoughts ~ as now would be the time right?

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

Hmmm. Heads? Heck I figured with Edelbrock and Hughes I was bound to come out alright. I would not have thought that would be the limiting factor. Converter tho'. Yes I know its mild but seems to fit my type of use. I guess that is pretty easy to swap though. I thought for sure my 1st ping...

Looking for more 408 pull at the big end?

So I built a 408 a few years ago. Started out just looking for under 500HP. About half way through the build I got a little amped up and went farther. Ended up with Eddy Magnum heads, polished massaged & deep port matched to an airgap by Hughes, then bolted on 1 7/8 race headers by TTi with 3.5...

Preheating Joe Gibbs break in oil to 180F

I have no problem with that. Its just a data point for reference Vs plain old naysayers.

Preheating Joe Gibbs break in oil to 180F

Just to throw in some data here. I own a NASCAR Stock Car built by Bill Davis Racing that was campaigned by Ward Burton back in the early 2000's. It has a Pontiac 355 siamese block with a dry sump and external oil pump. It is a REQUIREMENT to heat the oil to 180 degrees (all 4 gallons of it) on...

    Rod and Cap mismatch?

I recall back in the day (when building big blocks) I had a Mopar expert tell me to point the notches on the pistons 180 degrees off for added mid-range torque. His claim was the offset of the piston pin (when orientated the other direction) gave the added benefit. I tried it & I have to admit...

    Red locktite on freeze plugs?

No pins. Good question though. Siamese 355CI block and standard brass plugs. I asked him twice, and he ferruled his eyebrows and said "did I stutter the 1st time kid?"

    Red locktite on freeze plugs?

I had a professional NASCAR engine builder tell me that he epoxied core plugs in. When I removed one of his I did indeed find epoxy holding them in. They went back in the same way.

Magnum heads convert to sbc rockers?

I have this set up & I am pleased to date with it. Hughes supplied the tech & parts (1.65 ratio arms, pushrods, guide plates, matched up studs) and it has been working well in my 408.

    What carb.

I have a 750 Speed Demon that suits the bill. If you want something like it I could let it go your way pretty cheap.

    Intake roll pins

I just went through this with my Edelbrock intake. Take the advice of all of the great teachers here and pull the pins & use "the right stuff" sealant (more than you would think) then skip the supplied end gaskets. What i mean by "more than you would think" is what I would have considered a...

    So am I crazy?

My man, they are for fun. And in my view ~ you are having fun. How lucky are we that we can do this? 550HP engine / and you go build another faster one. I think that is great. I had a warm 360HP small lump in my Dart for years. It was great. Always started, would yank one wheel with slicks...

    408 going in

Well... I am shooting for pump, but its not the end of the world if that does not pan out. I have a load of 93 in there now, but yet to beat on it in street trim.

    408 going in

Ohhhhh yeah. With all of the hard parts done, debugging the small things is something to look forward to. I could nearly just sit back with a drink & just look at it now. Lots of the kind of stuff we all like to see here.

    408 going in

Awesome. That was actually lint off my shop towel. I had used a spray of brake clean to start to clear off the valve cover surface and ended up wiping a lot of things before I got started. There is something to be said for lint-free towels. Its all cleaned up.

    408 going in

Everything dialed in. Cam broke in, inner valve springs re-installed, roller rockers adjusted and locked, engine all buttoned back up, radiator electric fan tested... Now I wait for the drag strips to open & the salt on the streets to be washed away.

Need everyones opinion on why the radiator is smoking.

Well you type above that you open the radiator & its not even getting hot... So my thoughts were ~ that its not getting hot. Both radiator hoses hot? Meaning is it circulating coolant? My 408 takes about just under 10 minutes at idle to reach around 200 degrees - then turn on the fan. Thats is...
