I found the exact problem with my engine after years of driving it. No idea who built this engine. It didn't cause any problems but I corrected it once I found it. Just check for any signs of wear damage that might cause issues.

Thanks Jeff, the eBay set has two different covers (only one cover has the oil filler provision) unlike what the OP has. I guess the grommet will cover one for PCV use?

IDK if it was me I'd pass on it and look for a decent running engine and transmission combo from a car. There are lots of 5.2 and 5.9's out there. Or maybe I'm just lazy...

Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to why people do their own "upgrades" over stock setups that work well.. Sometimes it's just shiny and new.

The X heads have the big valves so that's a bonus and correct for that engine. Yeah I understand, I'll be 70 in a few months. Crawling under cars for some of us is painful now. No big deal, it's a very nice car so just enjoy driving it. :steering:

Which leads to more questions. The car does sound healthy and looks well cared for. Nick is this a low mileage car with the original 340? I'm wondering if it has the original bottom end, cam and heads with a swapped intake and carb. Inquiring minds. :)

I just want to add that the 340 was Chrysler's new Performance engine. The cams weren't upgraded, just a performance part of the package. That '69 when new would have high compression pistons as well, about 10.5 to 1. It should have a lumpy idle as mentioned. It sounds like the previous owner...

I like Nick and his videos but know they're mostly for entertainment value. Most of his builds are decided by his customers. I think he's a good ambassador for us and the classic Mopars we all love. This video just shows what can be done with a 318 that many people discard or replace.

Yes, these lifters require more preload. I 'm using stock non-adjustable rockers in my 340 and had to measure and order longer pushrods to use the 5003's to get the correct preload.

At this point Alec might want to check the whole engine build. I give him credit for being hands on but there are too many issues so far. Looks like he needs expert help there.

Alecb the guys have covered everything. I like to use a vacuum guage when doing the tune, it can also reveal any engine problems. I think there are lots of the sixpacks out there. They had a resurgence in I think, the 90's? A bodys are the perfect car for them to go in. They are usually setup to run OOTB with minor tuning. People go down rabbit holes with them though by changing out parts. Once setup properly they're a blast!

Yes, I have used Amazon as well. At least with Prime you don't get gouged on shipping. All the performance shops near here have closed so that option is gone for me. Closest one is over 100 miles away.

I feel your pain Steve. The price of everything here is so much higher for us Canucks. Even if you can find stuff here in Canada it's usually based on U.S. dollars so it's an extra 25% because of our weak dollar.

Since you have it apart you should get new gaskets. Why chance another teardown if you get a leak? I have an ill-fitting intake and hated redoing the gaskets and intake. Just my opinion.

Same situation for me, my 340 had a clip come loose on the original lifters. The engine had been rebuilt by the pervious owner with a purple shaft cam. When the lifter (clip) came apart my mechanic ordered the 5003's from Hughes on advice from his engine builder. I installed them and ordered new...

The 5003's I received from Hughes were near perfect. I was impressed at the quality of mine. I'm not sure what has gone wrong with your order and why Hughes is not responding. Maybe internal company issues over there? You shouldn't have needed to go through all that crap. I hope you get answers.

Sorry to hear about your issues. FWIW I ordered the same lifters from Hughes last year and they came inside a box with a clear plastic snap type case with ID stickers on it. Perhaps yours were broken open in transit and repackaged?

Well it looks like this thread revival has gone full circle. I have a 340 and wanted to go to a 408. We pulled the 340, installed the 408 and had major problems with it (this was about 10 years ago). It was a Blueprint Engine before Johnny Mac was there. Broke it in and it ran like crap, my 340...
