    size & "H-pipe"

2 1/2" and X pipe (smoother flow than H) and yes 3" is overkill and a pain to route and install.

    1 7/8 or 1 3/4 headers?

I have had a simple rule over the years as to sizing headers, get the biggest that'll fit.:D

    Stuck Heat Riser

There is a bimetalic spring on the shaft of the heat riser (unless it fell off), so when the engine is cold the counterweight keeps the plate closed. Or they use either a spring or the counterweight, can't remember. Either way when you start the engine the exhaust gases are now forced to go...

Differing size pipes make much difference?

I'd go 2 1/2 from the collector to the tail pipe tip, I never mix and match.

    Purple Hornies exhaust

Purple Hornies oh my god, It's been years since I heard that name but they were very loud and rapped like crazy on deceleration. I must be getting old

    Popping in exhaust

Spark plug fouled out and raw fuel building up in exhaust. Intake or exhaust valve not closing completely, usually you'll hear a ticking of tapping on that side of the engine. Could also be a burnt intake or exhaust valve. Perform a compression test on entire engine. Pull all plugs, carb wide...

    Exhaust set up idea

"I've Got The Purple Hornies. Yup and Cherry Bombs which I think are still out there. Those things were nasty, especially if you ran full length pipes like on a 1/2 ton pickup.

    X-Pipe, Thrush mufflers installed. (Video.)

Okay you asked. Personally I don't like dumps cuss of the way the sound reverberates off the ground and back up into the floors, tried it once and didn't like it. I prefer the deep rumble you'd get with tail pipes, other than that she does sound like she's got some attitude all right which is a...

    Header choice?

I'd go with the mini starter if for no other reason than they're a hell of a lot lighter and when it comes time to change the old heavy starter, and you will, you'll be saying to yourself why didn't I put in a mini. They're also smaller that the O.E.M. which really helps when there are header...

Help, my exhaust is killing me.

Sounds to me like you're running way rich, mine was doing that at first with the new carb. She'd drive ya out of the garage with your eyes burning and watering. Plugs showed a little black, went down 2 sizes on the primary jets and much better and now plugs are brown (I like a little rich). Also...

    opinions wanted please

Personally I wouldn't go 3" for anything other than a BB souped to the gunnels. 2 1/2" would be a better choice not only for backpressure but also for easier installation and routing especially around the rear and leafs. Terry

I'm running the Dynamax Ultra flo's Cheryl and I think they're a little louder than the Super turbos at least they sounded louder when I tryed both with the car up at the muffler shop, but you get my drift. :toothy10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hmi6jCdhTs Terry

So I guess 495 at the flywheel is not what you would call "real power". Terry
  28. demon seed

    383 and 2" ex. pipes

If the engine is stock you probably won't notice a difference between 2" and 2 1/2" piping but it kind of shoe horns ya in. Any real mods like big carbs, intake manifolds or cams ain't going to like the 2". Whos headers are ya running. Terry

    tudly or not studly ?

I'd leave the outside studs in place, if you can, cuss on a lot of heads there's coolant behind them. Mind you it's usually easier to get the headers in with a clean flange. Terry

    shortys vs longs

One reason that headers help with thru put of the engine is their ability to scavenge the exhaust system. Lets just look at one 4 into 1 header. As cylinder one fires and the piston starts to come back up for the exhaust stroke the exhaust is pushed out thru the header pipe and when the exhaust...
