    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Yes, I ended up ordering lifters and different pushrods from Hughes Engines and got the engine put back together. The valvetrain is quieter then it has ever been. My whole roller setup now is all Hughes with the exception of the cam which is still to roller one from Comp. I wrote a long...

    cam duration

I am running a 9.5:1 iron J headed 340 small block with an aggressive roller cam (286 duration/.544 lift on a 110 lobe sep) and she put down 421 at the flywheel. Listen to your audience and keep in mind that this is all about the total package on the build, not just the cam. I run 91 fuel with...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Here is another set of pics with clarifying info. The circled tolerances are the differences between the old and newly re-designed lifters. Seating area, or plunger depth looks to be the same.

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

OK fellas, sorry for the long silence. I have been doing my homework and building a case for Comp. I am going to do a typed letter to the company with all of the supporting documentation as phreakish recommended and see what happens from there. In the meantime I have been working with Hughes...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Here is a picture of the paint they put on the cam grind I received. They cant say they dont paint them because it even shows it on their site. WTF is wrong with these people. So in the future, I know to sand off this paint if its there. Please learn from my predicament.

Well said! I think that I will call again, because I am still torqued over that conversation. Too bad they dont have a head guy to talk with...or do they?

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Yes, its a stock stroke for now. When I lost the oil pressure and heard all the knocking, I was hoping it broke so I could make it a stroker. Everything checked good though. I already stripped all the paint off the cam and put a new oil pump in her so that part is good now.

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

OK I will make some calls tomorrow. I know that I have had good experiences with both Dave and Mike and Hughes and MRL.

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Yes, the cam is fine. Its the lifters and pushrods that are the issue now. Can I use a different companies lifters with this cam?

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Having a bad experience with this roller setup tells me no, but it did run awesome when it was working. I would stay roller, just frustrated right now.

Thanks brother, any suggestions on a good cam setup for my engine combo? Definitely staying away from Comp now from here on out. I will post the engine specs here shortly...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

I know, I was thinking the same thing. Looks like I am going to be doing some research on a lunati setup. I think that I am going to go away from the roller setup though, unless they have a better product.

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

One of my buddies told me to call Lunati or another reputable company other than Comp and change the cam setup again.

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

I am running the same pushrods right now and they are working, however, tight tolerance compared to the other 12 on the old lifters. Two sets of lifters had to be replaced with the newly redesigned ones and of course you can not just buy one as they are linked together. They told me to fix that...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

So I had very long conversations with three Comp Cam reps today and they all pretty much told me the same thing. Two years ago they did a major re-design on these lifters and beefed them up due to failures. The said that the plunger depth is deeper than the old design and may require a longer...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

I tore the motor down and inspected all of the rod bearings, and bottle brushed all of the oil ports as an added measure. I got a lot of chips out. Should be close. I am running some cheap oil in there for the first couple hundred miles to flush any additional leftovers out and then I am going...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

I totally agree with everything that you just said. Plunger depth is definitely deeper in the new lifters and the pushrods are not hitting, but too close for my comfort. I am going to pressure them until I get at least a matched set with what is in my motor now. I am not taking the chance. I...

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

I agree as well. The lobes are all good with almost no wear at all. The lobe on the left is actually the cam bearing section and the lobe on the right is the no **** lobe. I think it is just a bad angle from that shot. Trust me, I looked that over very closely.

    340 Roller Cam/Lifter Issues.

Good Evening all. Just wanted to get some advice on this one. I had to pull my engine due to an oil pump issue and losing pressure to the passenger head. I had lots of knocking and decided to pull the engine. After getting into it, I discovered lots of purple and green paint chips all...

Oil to back of engine question

Good question! I asked my builder this same question when he was building mine and he told me it is was not the norm from the factory and it gets oil back there so mine does not have it either. Subscribed.

Pulleys do not line up. any input is appreciated

Thanks and good luck. If you are gonna go with a new balancer, prior to installing it stick it in the oven for about 15 mins and then install it. New ones are tight and that method helps it slide on smooth as butter. Additionally you can feel it bottom out as your tightening it.

Pulleys do not line up. any input is appreciated

To me it looks like your balancer is too thick as well. Here is a snapshot of my setup. I am also running the same pullies as you with no issues. I am running the thinner stock style balancer though. Hope this helps.

    fattest cam in a 340?

Agreed here and to piggyback and help you out, here is an example of my old cam and the numbers stamped on it. My numbers were on the backside of the cam so I guess it depends on the cam company. This was a Schneider racing cam. You should see something similar on the snout. I love showing...
