How To A-833 4 Speed Rebuild pics

This tranny for this build had lots of miles on it so I changed out the syncros as they were pretty rounded over. I would only change the gears if you see some really bad wear/chipping or such. The gears you see going in this tranny are in really good shape if you need a reference. I will see...

How To A-833 4 Speed Rebuild pics

Pointy is good...rounded over is bad. A good rule of thumb when doing a rebuild especially when its got some miles on it is to change them out. It is cheap insurance and alot cheaper then replacing gears! I did some research for you and a set of syncros runs $49.95 at Brewers.

    4 speed in A-body

It might be easier for now to disconnect the linkage and remove the shifter assembly off the side of the trans. It is only held on with two bolts and then mess with the handle out of the car.

    4 spd rebuild help

This should help ya. I started this thread awhile back when I rebuilt mine. It is pretty simple if you have all the right tools. 4 months is ridiculous! I am in central cali. Not sure how far that is from you, but worst case, bring it here and we will do it in one day. Let me know if you need...

How To A-833 4 Speed Rebuild pics

Yeah I agree, the manual is vague in that area. I just ordered a whole new bolt set from Brewers to make sure I had the right ones. Hopefully the pictures helped you. Now I am not sure how the bolt pattern/layout changes from the newer/older style covers. I also have the newer ball detent...

How To A-833 4 Speed Rebuild pics

No worries brother, glad I can help out. I just got back around to getting the bolts out and here are some pics of how it should go. The bolts are laid out as removed from the cover. In the first pic, the lower right longer bolt goes in the lower right corner of the side cover in the second pic...

I ordered the kit, assembly lube, and an arbor tool through Brewers for $136.37 shipped! I did not order synchros as I had new ones already onhand. Those were not included in the kit.

Additionally, the longer shouldered bolts should go in the lower right two holes of the side cover. If you need more clarification I will pull mine back out to verify for you with pictures. Let me know as I do not plan to install my tranny until I pick the motor up from my Dad's house.

How To A-833 4 Speed Rebuild pics

I plan to use the GL-4 80W-90 gear oil and from my experience it should take just shy of a gallon. I am not planning on filling it until I get the motor ready to install. I will let you know the exact amount once installed. That is some pretty awesome linkage that you fabbed up! As a metal...

Z-bar frame ballstud bracket location/repair help

Thanks for the input. I knew something did not look right there. I think I am just going to go ahead and order a whole new assembly from Brewers since my shift handles are all rusted anyways.

How To A-833 4 Speed Rebuild pics

I agree with you on this one...it is a lot easier than I was expecting! Some mechanical know how and lots of patience! The service manuals help out even more. Now when it comes to an auto, that is a whole different animal! I am not sure that I would want to tackle one of those!

How do you remove the reverse gear in an A-833

I finally got around to working on the tranny this weekend. I have been wrapped up with the bodywork lately. I finally broke down and bought the service manuals and ended up making my own tool and everything popped right out! Thanks for all the inputs. Here are some pics.

Z-bar frame ballstud bracket location/repair help

I really appreciate the help with that link...Heres the progress from this weekend. I worked on the z bar mount and got the tranny up to make sure everything lines up. It looks pretty good to me. The only thing I am not sure about is how high or low the tranny bellhousing goes, but according to...

Z-bar frame ballstud bracket location/repair help

Heres one for you all that I need some advice on. This is another hacked repair that was done for the Z-bar. It looks like the firewall got rotted out, so someone drilled through the frame to add a mount in order to make the z-bar work. I want to put it back to normal with the proper frame...

4 Speed with B/E tailshaft help

Well, I could not find a patch in torsion crossmember locally and shipping for one was outrageous so I decided to go the create your own route. Here are some pics of it. All I need to do is fine tune it and then weld it in.

4 Speed with B/E tailshaft help

I received the new tranny parts today. I partially assembled the tranny to see how things were gonna line up and everything is a perfect fit! As you can see from the pictures, I need to trim a little in the floor pan to get the shifter to fit in, but just looking at the way it sits right now, it...

How do you remove the reverse gear in an A-833

I am currently in work on rebuilding the tranny and I have everything apart except that I cant get reverse out. The service manual says to use a suitable drift, but there is no room to get a drift on the back of the reverse shaft to punch it out. Any tips? Thanks! Ken

4 Speed with B/E tailshaft help

Well, I decided to take your advice and send the tailshaft housing back to Brewers and do this tranny setup the right way. I pulled the tranny apart today and separated the mainshaft from all the gears so I can send that in as well. I had to take the mainshaft to my local tranny shop to have the...

4 Speed with B/E tailshaft help

After looking closer, that particular crossbar you mention has been cut out. I guess that I need to find one somewhere and weld it back in. I definitely dont need any unwanted twisting. Thanks for pointing that out. Any ideas on where to get one?

4 Speed with B/E tailshaft help

I was thinking about doing this, however, like you mention here, I would need to order the A-body tailhousing, the A-body main shaft, and then I would have the problem of needing a longer driveshaft as well. I was trying for the easier route, but I may be better off doing it original.
