Rear Brakes off a Grand Cherokee?

They fit good on the 8.25 but need some fab work to adapt them to a 8.75. Wo had some from a 96 jeep and put them on a 8.25 in my son in laws dart.

WHO ELSE HAS REAR DISKS ON A 8 1/4

We put some on my son in laws darts 8 1/4 seem to work fine. We didn't hook the e brake up though. He was going to do that later but never has. I think they came off a 96 grand Cherokee.

8 1/4 rear and jeep brakes!

Good idea to have one, it's a requirment here if the PO PO pulls you over and does a safety check.

8 1/4 rear and jeep brakes!

My son-in-law and I did this swap on his dart a couple years ago. He never has hooked up the e brake but the swap was easy. Are intension at the time was to put it on my 8.75 but that didn't work so we put it on his 8.25.

    bleeding brakes

I'd start with the farthest one from master cylinder and bleed them all. The fronts may not need it but best to be sure.

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

If I remember right the jeep we took the brake set up off of had some type of link system with coil springs.

Big bolt pattern on a 8.75

Thought someone might find this useful. I switched my 8.75 rear end to BBP with some Dr. Diff axles and was trying to figure out what to do for brakes. I had a 7.25 BBP that I pulled from my 74 dart, so I popped a backing plate off of it and tried it on the 8.75. It fit perfect. I cleaned it...

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

The jeep brakes are on my son-in-laws 8 1/4 rear end in his dart and seem to work fine. He hasn't figured out how to hook up a E brake yet though. He bent a valve in his motor and has been working on that. I put the rear drums back on my 8 3/4.

    8 3/4 backing plates

I did that exact swap and every thing fit fine.
  13. stansblue72

    Are these calipers on correct?

Here's the way mine are mounted on my 74.

    Backing Plates needed!!! HELP!!!

I used the ones off of a 7 1/4 when I upgraded to the large bolt pattern on my 8 3/4. they worked fine. Here's a picture of the 7.25 backing plate on my 8.75 rear end.

    Don't get in a HURRY!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who is capable of doing this sort of thing. Had the rear end out of my dart took it all apart cleaned and painted every thing. Got all done took a picture of my grand feat. then noticed the e brake cables sticking out the back instead of the front. Oops...

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

Only update would be the brake set up seems to work okay on the 8.25. I went back to drums on the 8.75.

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

No, the only reason I mentioned the axles is that that was one of the reasons we decided to just put the set up on the 8 1/4 instead of trying to install them on the 8 3/4. I couldn't afford to buy axles right now. The problem was the rotor would not line up with the caliper on the 8 3/4...

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

Good Morning J.R. That looks interesting, would be neat to see if it would work.

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

The caliper bracket fit good on the 8 3/4 after we drilled the fifth hole in it, the same with the dust shield. The Rotor is the big bolt pattern and my axles are SBP so when we noticed the off set problem we made the decision to put the disc brakes on the 8 1/4 rear end under my son-in-laws...

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

We didn't put much effort in trying to get the set up to work on the 8.75. When we ran into the off set problem we decided to try them on a 8.25 that we had laying around.

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

The 15" big bolt pattern ralleys we have fit okay it's the 14" small bolt pattern ones I have that hit the calipers. We actually have one of the 15" on there now and it clears fine.

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

Looked at our install to see if it was hard lined to the calipers. It's not, the calipers from the jeep had rubber lines coming from the calipers that we hooked up to the hard line. Just had to put a bend in the hard line to make it work.

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

On the 8.75 we bolted the backing plate on then knocked the wheel studs out of the axle (because it is small bolt pattern) we held the rotor up against the axle hub then installed the caliper. In order for the rotor to line up propperly we had to move the rotor about 3/4 of an inch away from the...

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

The guy we bought the jeep parts from said it was a dana rear end under the jeep. The swap to the 8.75 might be possible, but it was over my head on what needed to be done so we just put the disc set up on the dart with the 8.25 under it.
  27. stansblue72

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

We just eye bald it on the 3/4". The stud end of the axle would need to stick out past the housing some where around 3/4 to an inch father to be able to get the rotor to line up with the caliper. The e brake hub on the rotor is what causes the difference. So I don't know if it would work, we...

rear disc from grand cherokee on a 8 3/4

We put a stock 15" ralley wheel on it and it cleared fine, the 14 did not it hit the caliper. His car has front disc's so we used the existing proportioning valve and it seems to work okay. We didn't have the e brake assembly to try it on so really don't know if it is a perfect fit or not. But...
