    1984 318 crankshaft swap into pre 74 318 block

My 84 318 block is cracked. I want to swap the entire 84 rotating assembly into the earlier block. I understand the #3 bearing changed at the thrust bearing area, but I'm not clear as to how. Can I make this crank swap? will the crank work? what do I need to do? I also want to use the...

    main bearing differences

I'm looking at buying new main bearings for a 73 318, standard. I've seen some bearing mfrs list bearings for 65-84, and others list 65-73 then 73-85. What changed in bearings around 73? why are some compliant for all years and others not?? _ _ _ just found an old thread that the...

    1965 Barracuda with 84 318

The engine is finally running, after the intake coolant debacle of this past June. I just wanted to post the carb/timing if anyone is interested. .020 over pistons, stock heads 84 318- all new bearings / seals... timing set has Dakota tensioner. Cam: Sum-6901 Dist: Jegs Electronic...

uh oh..... set back. water in oil

finally got the timing sorted on the rebuilt 318. One issue, was a poorly rebuilt carb. I sprung for a new one...it ran much better. still, initial timing wanted to be at 15 degrees, but it was hard to start. after some running and playing, the exhaust started to smoke. I shut it...

    intake gasket material

new engine gasket sets come with stamped metal AND composite (paper-ish) intake manifold gaskets to seal the intake port sides. What drives, which ones to use? and why? prep both with hi-tack before installation?

Cam Bearing install on a 360

I'm trying to install new cam bearings in a 74 360 short block. Old bearings are out. Trying to get the new ones in. Sheppard book says, install 1 or 5, work outside to inner bearings. I installed #5 (rear)...then flipped the tool around to install #1 from the back side. Bearing #1...

    318 Pistons: baffled

New thread, just to clean up the topic. Engine: 1968 318. thought to be original, turns out, its a replacement 318 with no vin stamping on the pad. From 1968 Dodge. Now that I've cleaned up the parts abit; quick caliper measurement....not micrometer. Crank MB journals measures: 2.495...

speed pro vs sealed power pistons

Whats the feelings on speed pro vs sealed power pistons for a stock build? Same part numbers except "AP" vs. "NP" letters. For example: 318 pistons with valve reliefs are 285AP ($13 each) or 285NP ($7 each). SHOCK? how good can a $7 piston be?

    360 with 273 manifolds

I posted this question in early A forum too: basically, how can the 273 cast iron manifolds be optimized with a 360 LA engine????? picts? port matching? instructions? What % am I losing in output vs. spitfires??????????? thanks

    Early A, 360, 904

Looking at a mild build. 74 360, 600 eddy carb, performer intake, unfortunately....the stock 273 manifolds (which should be barely ok for now). I have the option of either a SB 727 from 1965 or 84 lockup 904. both good tranny. The 904 will certainly fit the tunnel better than the 727 in...

Sum6900 vs Sum6901 cam kits others?

SUM 6900 cam and SUM 6901 I've used the SUM 6900 cam kit (with lifter for ~$120), and they work great in the little stock 318s we put together. Stock bottom ends, 6900 and a 4 brl. eddy intake and 600cfm carb./ stock exh. manifolds. Really and nice street motor. FWIW: sum-k6900 262/272...

Oil slinger? drip plate? oil seal style?

I've got an 84 LA 318 apart to be freshened up. Low mileage motor just got a cleaning, new freeze plugs, cam and lifter, rings, main and rod bearings. On the 84, the timing chain oiler is the sheetmetal drip plate off the cam thrust plate. The 3 mounting bolts are solid (no hole) On earlier...

360 smog heads or J heads??

I've got a 78 360 complete, with smog heads. Assuming a bottom end that is fully rebuilt with ~ 9:1 pistons, what are my head options for a 90% street car. I'm going to put in a summit cam kit (nothing radical), performer intake, spitfire headers. 904 trans, 3.23 or 3.55 rear, 2500 stall...

    Crank snout size issue

I've got a 65 Barracuda with a 65 273, automatic trans. I want to install a 72 318. 273's tired. Will I run into the Torque converter snout size issue? I think the pre 67s had a small snout, and the later larger?? is that true? If so, is someone making an adapter ring for newer motors...

    Upgrading a 72 - 340.

Looking for cost effective way to get the most out of this 340. It was a running motor (so said the previous owner), but I never heard it run. The eddy manifold was removed, and I actually found this stock, 72 340/4 intake on another core motor (go figure!). The mains look pretty good, as...

    1969 engine color

I've seen where 1969 340s are supposed to be Turquois, and others where they are supposed to be red. I know 318s were red for '69. All the picts of 69 340s that's Iv'e seen have been Turquois. Is there a Plasi-cote or Duplicolor code for Turqouis? thanks
