This is the other project I currently have underway - though I'd also post it on here for you guys in the US to check out. It's getting very close to being finished now and hopefully it will be completed and registered and on the street within the next 8 weeks ............. I hope.

Aiming for around 500 to 550 fwhp and mid to high 10's in full street trim - our street registration requirements are FAR MORE STRICT than most US states!!!

Cheers,

Mike

ps; message to self .... do not ever start two projects at once again!!!

I thought it was about time I put together a post on this project now it is getting towards completion, plus it might spur me on to get it finished - it was supposed to be completed two months ago. The car is a genuine VG Pacer h/top (body #123) although it has parted company with its compliance plate at sometime - probably when it was painted. The original high backed bucket seats along with the driveline have also disappeared.

I bought the car mid last year, I had been aware of it for a couple of years as it has sat neglected, buried in dust in the corner of a workshop in town for probably about 5 years. The owner was approached when we found it but didn't want to sell, two years on he changed his mind and sold it.

The last owner had intended to build a strong street car I believe and had stripped it back, had it repainted (only average) fully reupholstered and a custom fabricated drop tank installed. then for whatever reason the project was abandoned and the car sat for probably about 5 years - during which MANY parts disappeared. The car was originally Toledo Red, but has been repainted in a brighter shade.

It turned out to be the bargain on the century when I got it home, plus it came with a VG Safari parts car and a complete 360. I knew it had some performance parts with it but I was amazed at what I found in the boot (although unfortunatley it turned out that some stuff was ruined after years of rats pissing on it (very corrosive stuff  )

This was what I found in the boot:
1 set of Arias forged +0.060 pistons - new
1 set of aluminium rods new
full set of Harland Sharp roller rockers - new - ruined
full set of roller lifters - new - ruined
1 set of ARP main studs - new
1 set of ARP head studs - new
1 set of Comp valve springs, retainers and collets
1 3500 rpm stall converter
1 rebuilt 727 transmission still wrapped in plastic

The 2 cars and all the parts for $700!!!!

Here's what it looked like when I got it home:

it wasn't until October last year that I got time to was it down and see what we'd really bought, here's the results:

We decided to put the Charger project to one side and see if we could get the Pacer going in time for the 2006 drag season with the intention of building it as a street registered car to be eligible to run in the street meets at Hidden Valley. That's proven to be a little too ambitious a target  Any way in November we stripped the car and commenced work, it was stripped back to a completely bare shell and then reassembly started.

Here it is in November after being stripped:

As we started to reassemble it it became obvious the amount of parts that had been lost, rubbers (mainly the unique h/top ones of course ), door handles, locks & mechanisms, boot locks, rear window chrome clips and literally dozens of other small and large parts. I'm very fortunate that I have a large stock of h/top parts otherwise the project would have been impossible without a complete donor car. The wiring loom had been removed from the vehicle before painting with a set of shears by the look of it, it had been chopped into at least seven pieces and was unsaveable!!

Here's a shot of the interior in Feb, I've taken out the original Pacer dash as it was in poor condition and replaced it with a standard dash as all I need is the speedo and fuel gauge, the rest will be Autometer stuff. The car is amazingly rust free:

Another shout of the interior taken today with the Pro-ratchet shifter fitted

It did come with a good correctly painted bonnet, but I thought I'd go for something different, so had a look in the spare panels shed and turned up this bonnet that I acquired some time ago. It's fully steel (and heavy) and the cold air induction is functional, I've had it sand blasted and primed, now just a bit of bog and some paint and it'll look outstanding. Planning to get something based on the Ramcharger scoop decals made up to go on either side of the scoops.

Here's a shot of the boot with the custom alloy drop tank fitted, I've also made up a stainless steel battery tray for the boot.

The engine is going to be relatively mild for a start off, we'' build a much stronger engine for it over the next wet season for the 2007 racing season. The first engine will run Edelbrock heads, Crane Gold roller rockers, Comp mild hydraulic cam, CSI electric water pump, MSD ignition and MSD programmable timing computer, Holley 750 double pumper with Proform body, Torker inlet and Pacmaker headers.

I've just received the custom 9" and sat it in place yesterday, initially it will run a 3.5:1 LSD centre, but that will change to 4.11 when the second engine is fitted.

The rear wheels just arrived today (eBay come through again :-D ). I t will be running on Convo Pros; 4 1/2' on the front and 8 1/2" x 15" on the rear with Mickey Thompson 235/60/15 Street drag radials. A couple of photos with the wheels sitting on it this afternoon.

After sitting in the workshop gathering dust for the last 8 months with very little progress it's time for an update on this project. Work and other more pressing priorities (buying Pacers :-D) have meant over that period very little was progressed on the car. I had also been frustrated over setting up the diff (centre & brakes) and have been holding off on engine machining and assembly as I dont want a new engine sitting around for a few months before it's fired up.

At last a few things have started to come together and it's been like Christmas at the post office this week with goodies arriving every day. I had just about completed assembling a centre for the 9" over the past month 3.5 : 1 LSD when this baby turned up on eBay ... its a brand new Strange alloy carrier fitted with new Ford gears (3.5:1) and a new Detroit Locker .... I just couldn't resist it  plus it's a fair weight saving.

Another item that's been holding me up had been finding a set of roller lifters at the right price, eBay US finally came through and these also arrived this week

feb07rollerliftershy3.jpg

They were the final internal item I was waiting to find for the engine.

Then to cap the week off the carb I also got on eBay US turned up yesterday (great timing 6 days from auction end to in my hands in Darwin - thats faster than most Sydney or Melbourne suppliers!!!).

It's a 750 cfm Dominator - don't need chokes up here :evil so I thing the engine should be able to breathe OK. Just need to get a Mopar M1 to suit a Dominator pattern now.

These photos were taken on Sat afternoon when Chris (Lynx), Phil (RangerDanger) and another mate came around to help me start to put the graphics on the Pacer H/top (and drink beer!). The intent is to use the nostalgia dragster look, I took a lot of photos of Darts when I was working in Canada, and have used those and "Old Daze" as the inspiration.

The first thing was to lay the metalflake silver stripes across the boot, they will also be running down the roof and the plan is to get the boys to help me next week end to do the roof. At least three sets of hands is best, also helps to have at least 3 people measuring as the afternoon progresses :?

The car will have a large name graphic covering the doors and 1/2 of the rear quarter. That graphic is being printed now and will hopefully be applied this afternoon or tomorrow - will post more pics as soon as it's done.

It took a lot of measuring and calculating to work out the optimum width for the stripes and their placement ... this part is best tackled early on in the afternoon :-D While Coopers steadies the hand it can induce some low frequency wobbles!

Here is Chris and Phil laying out the first guide mask line.

The name was applied to the car this afternoon. My thanks to RangerDanger for both coming up with the name and for providing the graphics file to give to the signmakers.

The background to the name is that the NT Police race a Commodore in the Street Meet races up here that has the name "The Heat", soooo .... nothing like a "Cool Breeze" to blow out "The Heat". We still have the stripes over the roof and a whole lot of performance decals to go. It certainly won't be a car for sneaking discretely around in. :-D :-D

Here's the results of todays work .....

Couldn't wait to post these pictures of the finished product ......... I'm VERY happy with it :-D :-D

Thanks to Ranger Danger and Lynx for all their help. I only wish it had an engine so I could drive it to the show this weekend (sideways  ).

Found an old Hurst Equipped badge that I'd forgotten I had in the shed which added a nice finishing touch to the rear.

There has been a lot of progress recently on this car, although no new photos yet, should be more photos within the next month or so.

All the engine machining has been finished and the final engine assembly should start this weekend. I had a number of very big (read expensive :-( :-( ) setbacks during the engine build to date, for example:

1 couldn't easily source bearings for the aluminium rods, so had to but a new set of Scat H beam rods

2 wanted to go to internal balance on the crank for ease of torque converter swaps etc, so had to buy a new Scat forged crankshaft, which of cause meant the new Romac balancer I already had was unsuitable, and of course buy new bearings as the crank I was originally going to use was 10/10

3 the Arias .060" forged pistons we'd bored the block to suit and bought rings to suit were too heavy to balance the rotating assembly correctly (each piston and pin weighed around 760 grams) so had to buy a new set of SRP pistons and rings and hope the bore clearances would be within tolerances (they were :-D )

4 to get the correct seat pressure for the valves (using Edelbrock heads), had to get new valve springs, as they were larger diameter, had to machine the heads to suit (at least I already had the correct springs on hand).

5 also to get the required seat pressure had to get .050" offset valve collets and retainers, the only retainers available were Manley titanium and cost nearly $450 even from the US

6 had to machine the main caps to suit the Hughes stud girdle.

The car itself is now in at Rev It Up for the final fit out, ie; plumbing electrical etc, because if I try to do it myself it will take at least another couple of years to finish. At this stage my goal is to have the car running and street registered within the next 10 weeks, so we'll see how it goes.

Beautiful project, although I think someone was in a hurry during part of it. It appears as though they installed the steering wheel on the wrong side....
(LOL)

That cold air induction hood (bonnet) is cool. Any more photos?

Unfortunately I won't be using the hood now for a couple of reasons:

1. As it was all fabricated out of steel it's WAY too heavy for a race car, might use it on a street only car one day, and

2. I decided to use a Super Victor inlet with a 2" 4150 to 4500 spacer/adaptor so even the carb will now stick through the hood.

As we have very tight restrictions on scoops (exposed carbs sticking through the hood - not allowed - considered a pedestrian hazard) etc for street registered vehicles I'm looking at something like the '66? superstock scoop which should keep me legal.

Great looking Pacer! I was in Darwin 4 different times in 81 & 82 - a week each time (courtesy of the RAAF and USAF). Never got a chance to see all your great Aussie Mopars BUT did get to the casino a few nights each time LOL.

Gidday Mike,

Hows things? The Pacer looks the goods... I love the Retro work you've done on it.. Real trick indeed!

Nothing like a bit of Mopar Thunder from Down Under!! Way cool car!!

Time for an update .....

Progress has been made, albeit a little slower than I hoped. About 75% of the final fitup has been completed and the engine is within a week (I hope!) of being ready to drop in.

Here his the car on the hoist at Rev It Up today ....

New handbrake cables fitted as well as new braided flexible brakeline and new steel brakeline.

diffel1.jpg

Fitted new 1/2" aluminium fuel line and we're using the original fuel line as the return line from the regulator.

fuellinenx4.jpg

New flexible braided stainless brakelines for the front.

newbrakelineyo1.jpg

We ended up having to completely rewire the car from front to back, everything is now nicely tucked away where the glovebox used to be, no need for a glove box or stereo in this car

gloveboxba6.jpg

We've fitted 2 thermo fans to it, as they're so big, one has been fitted to the rear as a pull fan. Look closely and you can see the MSD 7AL2 & MSD Programmable Timing Computer attached to the radiator support to the left of the radiator.

pullfanaf8.jpg

This is the other fan set up in push configuration of the front of the radiator

pushfantl9.jpg

I've had a couple of questions about how I mounted the B&M shifter. I wanted it a bit higher than mounting it directly on the floor and I was also concerned about the acute angle that the cable was bending ......... so here's my solution

Hopefully another update in a couple of weeks time.

Cheers,

Mike
