I'm taking on a project and trying to decide the route to take. I bought a 72' Gold Duster with a low mile original 318. I really wanted to find a 340, but did find a 360 with the 340 J- heads and a rebuild kit along with it. Taking my mopar friend's advise, I brought it home. Now, I'm not gonna drag race this car in the future but what I'm looking for is performance. Is it possible to get close to 400 HP with a 318 with what I have? Do I build the 360? Do I build the 318 and keep it in?

Build a mild 360. Problem solved.

Yep... yep... yep.... uh, huh....

Go 318! They create more torque and horsepower! Just kidding! Amen to what they have advised.... You can get there with the 318, just easier to get 400 horse from your 360.

The 360 will also have more torque because of the higher displacement

I think you should build a 572 and be done with it ! I don't go along with the main stream crowd, but in this case build the 360.

go the 360.

I build a genuinely superior 318 to the one in that article. more cam, more compression, more head work, it made 352hp.

I officially call bullshit on the whole "mild 318 can make 400hp" articles. all of them.
