O.k, been out of the car game for 15 years and getting back into it. Bought a clean 1973 Dart Sport 340 4 speed car so I am going to build a motor like I had years ago.
I picked up some parts, need some advice

#1) 340 Block, Standard bore.
- casting # 2780930-340-5
- Pass Side # 2A1461139
- Front Left # 37830144 340R
- Rods # 3418645
- Pistons # 3671155, 277-1
- Crank # 2532457 .010/.010
- X Heads #2531894

#2) 340 Block, .030 over bore.
- casting # 2780930-340-5
- Pass Side # 1B365483
- Front Left # GM 340P 35460007
- Rods # 3418645, no caps! (who does that)
- Pistons # ??????????
- Crank (standard), no casting number, wide flashing (i think it was balanced and they removed the #)

I am looking to build a 10:1 comp motor with the standard block, standard crank, factory rods, x heads (stock), 273 adjustable rockers, 292/480 cam, six pack EFI, Factory 68'-70' exhaust manifolds.
The car will be driven for leisure and I don't plan to beat on it too much.

1) Can someone tell me more about the blocks?
2) Who makes a good 10:1 piston?
3) Will the compression be to high for today's fuels?
4) who makes a good Cam?
4) Hydraulic or mechanical lifters? I would think hydraulic would be fine.

Input?

Pistons,budget Hyper Speed Pros.The kicker,Icon piston are forged,not much more(maybe 100?). Guessing ,you are looking at the Comp Cams 280 Magnum. Might need a 2500 to 2800 stall,if auto. For a couple of bucks more,check out the Comp XE,orLunati Voodoo. A split pattern,more likely,to handle 10:1 and be streetable on pump gas.Unless you are looking for maximum h.p/ adj the valves occasionally,recommend the hydraulic. My .02,:eek:ops:

#1 was built on Mon. Dec 6, 1971..........1972 model year

#2 was built on Tues, Apr 13, 1971........1971 model year

I'll give more input when i have a few moments.....

#1

2A1461139 - 2 =1972, A= Lynch Road, Detroit, MI plant car built, partial vin of car engine came from.
strange sequence.
37830144 340R
340
R = regular fuel
3783 = Day 3783 is Monday, December 6, 1971
0144 = 144th engine built that day

crankshaft 2532457 if a forged unit. Motor #1 is a piece together unit from another 340. the other with wide parting line is likely forged also

#2
1B365483 - 1 = 1971, B = Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, ending vin of car

GM340P35460007
G = 1971
M = assembled at the Mound Road Plant
340
P = premium fuel
3546 = Day 3546 is Tuesday, April 13, 1971
0007 = 7th engine built that day

I would say you have a nice starting point with options. Look on the top and bottom of the .030 pistons should be a part number on them somewhere.
