I set my distributor drive with the slot pointing to #1 bolt on the intake but when I install the distributor it has the rotor at #4 or #7 not straight ahead on #1. (Engine is on TDC #1 compression stroke). It is a Mallory Unilite with mechanical advance. Anyone know if they are set up different than the factory dizzy and I just need to rotate the drive gear to get the rotor pointing forward.

It turns out not all distributors are made the same, IE relationship between drive tang and rotor.

It really does not matter. You can actually close your eyes, toss in the gear, and toss the distributor in after it. Set the timing marks up on no1 compression

Do NOT however, set up for TDC. Rather, set up about 15-20 BEFORE TDC and stick the no1 wire in the cap wherever the wire points.

If you want it to look "factory correct" you can walk the gear around with a large screwdriver.
