I wonder why the exact reason(s) they ditched the 383 and went to the 400? I know the petro embargo and all, but the 400 wasn't about mpg. I can't imagine they thought it would be better for the EPA. Why?

I agree with the external balancing, wish they were internal balanced. As for the cast crank, no sweating that. People going 450-500 hp for years and never hurt the crank. Some have taken the cast cranks to 9's in the 1/4 without failure.
Ford Clevelands saw 9000 plus RPM on the back stretch at Talladega and they all had cast cranks.

Maybe they wanted a few extra cubes in an attempt to make up for the drop in compresion?

I believe they actually wanted to standardize the BB bore. 4.32 like the 440. That would have made the 383 a 396 which would have been awesome to compete with the Chevy guys. However, marketing thought 400 sounded better so 4.34 bore it was. But just maybe somebody on the inside messed up in die castings, who knows for sure... lol

Probably to have a competitor cid wise with ford and chevs offerings around the same size and probably also distance it from the 360 more.

I've heard that was the reason. Unleaded fuel would require lower compression, and the extra cubes would help offset it. The timing roughly coincides with the other changes made to accommodate unleaded, ie. hardened valve seats.

Back in the day..the 60s,70s,80s,90s...... Chargers with 440 auto and 3:32 gears!?s etc. I wonder just how many times I saw a 383 RR with 4 speed, 3:54 gears out run the Charger/ No track, just south Ga. blacktop/
383s came with dana 60s ?
440 chargers with 3.23s were slow as well look it up tug boats

hot damn! hylomar will seal anything but the crack in your ***, that stuff is no joke.
Works real well sealing big block intakes, just a thin bead is all that's needed.
The small block guy's can have the right stuff. It's junk. imo

A 440 Charger would leave your 340 Dart in the dust just past the stripe and heading on the freeway . Not even close.
A 440 A-Body with headers would leave you like your standing still. IDGOF what you think or the rag sheets say.

The 440-3.23 B bodiies were top enders in my neck of the woods. These were about the only cars that we would outrun the State Patrol in. In 1970 the county I lived in-the County Sheriff and 3 or 4 Deputies drove 70 Charger R/T's and Coronet R/T's, all with 440 and 3.23 gears. I once heard they never got outrun in. It was pretty cool to see Hi-Impact color 440 cars with the bubble gum lights on top.

440 charger after the stripe but only if the driver had balls i had that dart past 135 mph on the hi-way
I had my duster 340 nitrous 5900 in drive 26.99 tire 727 3.23s drop that in wallace see what the mph is 145 mph and change
i didnt just race 1/4 mile
1/2mile
1 mile
Meanwhile still beating the 57 chevy 327 spray 4sp 4.56s
289 pinto 302 heads 175 shot top loader 4spd 4.56 spool
Cars with power can best fast without 4.56s
Only guy who got past me on the hi-way was 1994 zr1 and not till i was tached out
