440 dart radiator...

No offense to anyone, but after 2 years of mucking around with every electric fan sold, i went back to manual, and it solved all my problems.

[WANTED] - Stock V8 Radiator for A-body

The thread started with me looking for a smaller (read thinner, 2 core) Rad, because i was convinced by big 4 core Griffin was too thick. AJ/FormS is totally correct here, from my experience. I learned from all this that the rad is hardly EVER the problem. In going manual, my coolant looked great inside the cap, only to find pounds of rusted sludge in the engine and on the bottom of the rad. Since i just went through this, here's what I'd do:

1. Listen to AJ/FormS
2. Drain and flush the **** out of your system; put the water hose inside the coolant ports in your engine and make sure it all comes clean.
3. Get the 7 blade AJ talks about, it made all the difference with me.
4. Check for stuck thermostat. possibly remove (temporarily, don't roast me) to see if problem changes.
5. Your hoses could be so wasted that their collapsing under a load, heard of that too.
6. I also read somewhere that someone's water pump vanes had rusted/worn/whatever right off. No impeller=no movement.

Your actually in much better state that I was. My rad was twice as thick, so there was near no chance i was gonna cool the car, but these methods worked for me, good luck.

well, I know the ports in the engine are clean because I built the engine myself and it doesn't have 5000 miles on it . It doesn't have a stat and if I take the radiator cap off you can actually see the coolant flowing, especially if I give it some throttle, it flows quite well! The water pump is also new. As far as the 7 blade fan, does anyone know the brand or part number for it? That's what I would like to try next.

You might be moving the coolant too fast thru the rad. for it to cool w/ no stat. I put a 28 x19 crossflow griffin in mine, the finned area lines up perfectly w/ the rad. opening. the side tanks are behind the original metal . Am running a mech. 7 blade 17" fan, w/ a reworked alum shroud. biggest fan I could make work w/ this set up. Also have a 15" elec fan , mounted off the rad. as far as I could, in front, (so as not to restrict airflow) that is set to come on at 200 degrees. So far so good. The griffin has been very tough so far. I accidently pulled the floor jack out from under the aftermarket k frame, and bent the rad. up about an 1 1/4" in the center, and it hasn`t leaked a drop ! The elec. fan has not come on since I set it at 200. I haven`t had it in 95* heat at the stop lights in the city traffic yet, but so far so good! I can still open up the rad. opening and let air hit the side tanks if I have to, but don`t think that would do a whole lot. jfyi 505" 68 fastback.

That would be my opinion as well. Thermostats are there for a reason.

Pateras, been a little but looking back at this thread im trying to figure out what exact fan you recommended and cant find anything on the thread..Im ready to get the new fan and fix this problem.

I just know ive been racking my brains trying to figure out which radiator to get. I have the 440 in my dart with the original 318 radiator which has a 17x22 inch core size and need a little better cooling. I want to make the right decision on which one so i dont have to return it so need something that will indeed fit in there. Im wondering if one of the 26 inch core aluminums will bolt right in place of the factory 22 inch..I have 29" between the inner fenders..

Looking seriously at this one. 3 row and says it will coll 600HP and the dimensions are about the same as the original old radiator.

Going with a Champion myself... You should watch the engine masters episode on fans. Belt driven fans are pulling as much as 50hp off on the dyno.
