440ci, what is the power? ive seen anything from 375, 395 hp ??? were these figures you read in tech spec from when the cars were new? as we know the carburation/exhaust on these cars would not have been too good then? ive heard stories that the figures came from an engine running in some test centre not even in car and the figures derived there with fancy carbs, ign, exhausts....?:bootysha: has anyone put a relativety STOCK 440 on the rollers? happy new year every one, cheers for all the input, my barracuda much better for the help im getting!

The power of a 440 changed over the years (just like all engines). It would be hard to give a real reply to your question.

Hear are some numbers I found after a quick search.

1966……….350hp
1967……….350hp, 375hp
1968……….350hp, 375hp
1969……….350hp, 375hp, 390hp
1970……….350hp, 375hp, 390hp
1971……….335hp, 370hp, 385hp
1972……….225hp, 245hp, 330hp
1973……….220hp, 275hp
1974……….220hp (Calif.), 230hp, 275hp

So the HP is all over the place compression dropped, cams changed (along with other things) the way they were rated also changed around 72.

prior to 72, HP was gross. From 72 on, net. Gross HP was : no fan ,no air cleaner ,open exhaust, optimised timing and jetting. Net HP: everything on the engine that it would have if installed in an actual car. Both are flywheel HP not rear wheel.

many thanks for the information!:cheers:im told my engine a pre production 65,not sure the compression also told originally ran a 6 pack carb settup. now, im running holley 750 carb, vac sec<car a 4 speed>shumacker headders, edelbrock performer dual plane inlet, msd 6 ign and points dizzy. i want to change cam as it idles so fine, no lumpiness so know its very mild, also having pal check over carb as car has no real punch, sounds daft but well hard to spin tyres! we going to see where jetting is also.:read2:
