Anything here that is a date code?

Thanks........

Disagree. Looks like a cone type to me.
The cone type bolts together from the ring gear side of the carrier. The clutch type bolts together from the opposite side.
489s are typically cone, 742 typically clutch. Of course, since open, clutch, and cone interchange......?
As for date code, I'll bet there is one, I just don't know ow how to read it.

Cone, just like the one on the right side of this photo. The one on the left is a clutch-type - for comparison sake.

As for date look on the ring gear.

There should be a clear date on it if it's OEM.

It should read like 6-17-68 no decoder rings needed.

As for date codes on center section.

I can not make head or tail of them.

I even made a post about it a few years ago.

I posted a bunch from eBay adds and none of them made sence.

I wonder if it is that 10,000 day calendar thing. Kinda hard to decifer if you don't know what date day one was.....

Day one of the 10,000 day caliber is known

The problem I found was the numbers and letters were almost random

As I suspected and you guys confirmed, it is a cone type. It seemed from the picture the case bolts went in from the ring gear side but I wasn't sure. It's claimed to be out of a 1972 Imperial, 3.23 ratio.

it appears from all my reading here and elsewhere that the case dating method is not consistent if there even is one! Still awaiting ring gear date stamp from seller.

Good discussion, thanks for all your input........
