590 cam

-
they are cut at 106,,,,yours is 2 degrees advance...

271 degrees is what i measured last time i installed one...and it was a small block cam.

Thanks, well that's OK, I was going to install it at 104 anyway, but got the 9 key way timing chain just in case

I was also checking out the lifters and noticed one of them has a small hole on the side, I guess manufacture defect.

I bet you got the oval track version. They were always cut on a narrower profile.

Tell us about the engine and the ride it is going in.

Mike

.030 over 383
11:1 with arias domes
Arp and shot peened stock rods
Steel crank
Full port 452 heads
Street dominator intake
750 mighty demon.
Got all the rings file fitted and started installing pistons tonight, I'll get some pics in the morning

And it's going in a 72 swinger, 727 with 4000 converter
8 3/4 with 3.91ss. Going to have ladder bar/coil over suspension

Well ppl can say its old technology but its worked for so long you can't go wrong with it

The 590 will be a BIG cam in a 383. Think 7000+ shift points. It's gonna want a very high stall converter. The 4000 stall you mentioned would be the minimum I would consider. 5000ish would probably be closer to optimum. Or a smaller cam.

got one in a 360..shift at 6500 rpm....converter flashes to 5k

That is going to be a big cam in anything and with it's LSA it isn't going to have nice street and idle manners.

What do you plan to do with the car?

If you want a cam that big and plan to do street driving a 104 or even 106 LSA sounds like misery to me. My father has a 104LSA with [email protected] and it's misery to drive through town. SOunds like a top fuel dragster and has a powerband like a 2 stroke dirtbike. Works great at the drags, sucks on the street.

Edit and that is in a .040 over 454ci.

You can throw all that out the window in a A body with 3.91 gears. It's a good cam. Sure, there are more modern grinds......but it was good when it was state of the art and it's still good now.

Being in a lighter car with short gears will nullify everything you stated. It will run good I bet.

Now that I agree with.

He doesn't seem "too concerned" about the street though. lol

I'm tellin yall, I bet that is just a different version. Used to be, you could get them like that. The 528 was available at one time with both the 112 and 108 LSA, for example.

There was also a different version of the 508 small block cam ground on a different LSA.

If I had the money it would get a 630-640 lift roller, my uncle drove his .590 motor everywhere. But hopefully it won't be too much longer and I'll be able to let you know the results

Agreed. Bottom line is a grind is a grind. Doesn't matter when it was invented.

THe trend I see with current cams is to alter the ramp angles and a trend towards larger LSA's. Of course rollers are more popular than ever.

I've love the .528 cam but in the 112LSA. Used it twice now.

That cam was/is awesome...ran it in 1986 in my s/strip '71 Cuda 340, stock motor, all steel and with an 850DP, Strip Dom int., hdrs etc., was ok on the street but did have a 4200 verter and 4.30's, made 379hp and ran 12.3's@108. My mate runs the .590" in his 440 Dart over here, 3150 all in, 10.1's@130 1.39 60's, 5000 stall, 1050 Dom, the cams just starting to run out of puff at the top end though with 4.56/31's @6800, he says if he shifts anything over 6400 through the gears the car slows.

In a big block that .528 is a guaranteed 11 second combo.

If that .590 cam is running out of steam after 6400 I'd be looking at the heads. That's plenty of cam. That .528 cam is still within 5% of peak power at 6400 RPM.

He's running MCH ported Eddys 440 port size, 320cfm@600, been trying to persuade him right or wrong to buy my old CC.650 solid for $150 that I ran in 1990 in the blue Cuda.....he's at 12.7:1CR

Streetable is different to everybody. Someone with power brakes by all means should have a lower duration with wider lobe center to take advantage of the manifold vacuum... But me with no vacuum concern that doesn't matter.
Everyone said dads motor wouldn't be very street friendly with .604 lift at the valve and 264* @ .050 but it starts right up and CAN idle down to 800 rpms and is a wicked street car.
Also, look at IQ52's build "pops 440" that made crazy power with pretty much no compression and a stout cam. So I'm going to have to agree with Rusty, Tony, and hot metal that the .590 is gonna be a monster.

Well these no name grind Mopar cams were right on the money, installed straight up it came out to 105.5 put it in the 2*advanced keyway on the crank and re degreed it right at 102.5
