62 Dodge D500 New Starter Wiring

Greetings,

Me and a friend are working on a Dodge D500 Grain Truck that was exposed to some pretty nasty flooding that wiped out the starter (everything else has been repaired and replaced or checked and is good to go). So we got a new Starter for it, Only Problem is, the New Starter has the Solenoid on the starter itself and has two wires (one to the Solenoid, one to the starter) to hook up on it where as the old Starter only had one wire going to it. We need to figure out how to wire up this new starter. For the Starting Circuit on this truck we have a Starter, Battery, Firewall Mounted Starter solenoid (the round "magnetic" switch with 2 posts on each side, and 2 posts on the front) and what looks like a Starter relay next to that Starter Solenoid that has a couple wires hooked up to it, and the ignition switch.

Does anyone know how to Wire up this two wire starter versus the original one wire starter as the starter instruction sheet does not cover this???????

id guess you have wrong starter. some heavy trucks used different than pikups / cars
 
Many of the old listings nowadays are wrong; I have consistent issues finding the right parts for '62 Dart /6.

A photo of your new starter and starter solenoid would help. The solenoid you have sounds like a standard Ford starter solenoid. One lug will have a wire from the battery and the other lug wll have a big wire to the single stud on the old starter.

You can use this solenoid: make a new wire, about 10 gage, from the 2nd solenoid big lug (the one with the big wire to the old starter) and send that to the small lug (the starter solenoid lug) on the 2 wire starter. Then get a new large battery cable to run from the battery to the new starter's big lug.

There are other ways to do the battery wiring. If the cable from the battery to the solenoid is long enough, you can run that direct to the new starter's big lug and then re-use the old cable from the starter; route that from the new starter's big lug to where the battery cable used to connect into the starter solenoid.
 
Thanks for the Replies. Turns out that Solenoid wasn't even part of the starting circuit but used to Power an electrical socket at the back of the truck. But we ran into another problem, We did it get running today though. Now the Clutch won't disengage. It's got a Hydraulic Clutch (remember this thing was in water about 3 inches deep from the bottom of the door) and won't disengage to go into gear. The inspection plate was off during the flooding. Hydraulic Components seem to be all in working order, Push Pedal, Slave Cylinder works, Looking in the inspection plate, the clutch disks move, we can see a noticeable gap between the plates when the pedal is pushed, but it just grinds gears when trying to put it in gear with clutch pedal pressed. Short of taking the transmission out, does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be causing this????
 
1) Clutch has rusted to the pressure plate and/or flywheel. Seen this before and it only needs to stick in one spot. I can't be sure from what you say if the 2 sides of the clutch disc are free from the pressure plate and flywheel, or are stuck to them and the 2 opposite friction discs are just spreading apart.
2) Pilot on the end of the input shaft has rusted/corroded into the pilot bushing/bearing in the end of the crankshaft.
3) Input shaft rusted to mainshaft inside the trannie; did it get water in the trannie? Has it been drained to see?

Your only chance to free this is to hold in the clutch pedal, and have someone tap on the side of the clutch disc, rotate the engine (engage starter for a moment with hands out!) tap it again, and so on over and over. The idea is to make sure the disc is free from the pressure plate and flywheel. Not sure if that will do anything for the pilot bushing; you can just try.

I can't think of a good way to work some lube up into the pilot hole without contaminating the disc. So you may just have to pull it and clean it up.
