65 Barracuda is getting a new drivetrain. All else is stock. Might as well do the "smart" wiring upgrade!

electronic ignition. simplicity and reliability is key. NOT a show car by any means....just a weekend driver.

looks like the HEI is the way to go. MP electronic "kit" is ~ $200 now........

Questions:
1) what is the required "donor" distributor?
2) what is the cost?

Ammeter "bypass". oh no...THE dreaded topic of all time!!!!!! lol

1) tie the two leads together not connected to the ammeter: BAD
2) run ammeter leads with an internally regulated alt. directly to the batt, leaving the ammeter in the circuit. ammeter does nothing... opinions?
3) what's your "favorite".
4) the "mad" electrical bypass?
5) leave it in place.....why worry.....

Headlight Relays?

1) I like the GE Nighthawks. I've got enough parts to do the relays with ceramic sockets. VERY VERY important with higher wattage bulbs.
2) ..no option here....imho....do it.

Anything else???????? what would you add?

1) stereo will go in. any power needed for an amp will come off the batt. directly. Head unit power off stock radio leads.

Depends on your engine. You need a 72/3 or later Mopar breakerless distributor. Make sure it's NOT a "lean burn." That is, make sure it has a single pickup coil, a working mechanical advance, and a vacuum advance. Depending on the performance level of your engine, you may need to re-curve it, and maybe your old one needed it, anyway

IF you have no heavy added accessories, and IF you are careful to make the bulkhead connectors, the ignition switch connector and switch, and the ammeter and it's connections "up to new" specs, you can get by OK with a factory (35--45A) alternator. Otherwise, I'd do the MAD bypass if you have a factory harness. End of story

Read this thread if you have not. It gives excellent ideas on converting ammeters to a cheap Sunpro volt meter, and is the method I used on my 67. I see no reason to need a voltage scale. I simply calibrated the new voltmeter for 14V at the center of the old ammeter scale. I know "about" where 12.6 is everytime I turn on the key.
