My 72 340 Duster has a small pinion 8.75 rear as most do, from reading here and there I thought the pumpkin chunk had a three digit identification, I have the casting number which ID'd it as small pinion. The only other marking i see is a X on the drivers side of the case. I plan to do gear change and have never been into the axles, one axle is leaking and i will have to make repairs soon. Does this X signify anything?

My 742 case has an X on it too. I don't think it means anything.

last 3 digits of casting # Large X, 2, 9 another easy way to identify
my 741 has large X
my 742 has large 2
my 489 has large 9
