Before I ask my question, yes, I did a search and didn't see a specific answer...I recently came into (my second) 65 Barracuda. This one has a 180hp 273 with a 3 speed, that was originally on the column but converted (poorly done) to the floor. Will the A-833 bolt up to the same bell housing?
Norm

Depending on what's been done already, you'll want a 10.5" bell housing so you can use a larger 10.5" clutch. If you go with the overdrive unit, you'll need the input bearing retainer hole bored out slightly by a machinist.

p.s. You can get later bell housings in aluminum, which is nice for weight savings. I have one on my '65 Barracuda, along with a hydraulic clutch conversion to get rid the z-bar.

We are all thankful for you having taken the time to
"search",,

So many come onto the site and ask a question that has been answered or ignored a dozen times during the previous week/month... "headers come to mind"..

Depending on your bellhousing #, you may be able to slide that 4-spd right in there. Bigger clutch being an option/upgrade,,

cheers .. thnx for "searching"

Bell housing number? Location and what to look for? The bell housing is out and on the shelf. I'll have a look for the number first thing tomorrow.
Thanks

Hi, any info, link to inquire about hydraulic clutch swap you used?

Thanks Dave

If the bell housing is original, it is for 3 speed only. So you will probably need a 4 speed bell housing from a 64 to 66 A body. Depending on what you are doing with the engine, it is possible to convert to the 10.5 bell housing from a later A body but uses special parts and can get expensive. The casting number of your bell housing would be covered up by the front of the transmission.

Or just get the right bell housing to begin with.

Ideally, yes. But when I went looking for a late 70s overdrive bell housing with the 5.125 bearing retainer I couldn't find one. I'm sure there are many out there but none that I could find within reasonable driving distance.

if you search slant six a833 into a 318 small block. it is long but in there. I have a little blurb on fitting a 4"3/8" bellhousing to a 5"1/8" retainer. I don't know much about the 65, 66s but if they use a different size or shape bell housing . you have to make sure your starter will work properly if you go to the 10.5" clutch.

Sure.

I used a Wilwood 3/4" master cylinder + reservoir and a "Hydramax" throwout bearing from American Powertrain. They also sell a complete kit, but it's spendy. I spent some time to very carefully measure where to place the master cylinder and then fabricated a pair of plates to sandwich the master cylinder to the firewall. The measurement is super critical to get the right pedal throw and stop. Others who have done this operation say you can just be in the ball park, but that wasn't my experience. There are some good threads that show that operation if you look around. I also welded a y-axis bolt spacer to the clutch pedal to line up the master cylinder piston. My car is in storage right this moment, but I'll get some pics when I can. It's a ton of fiddly work to get the hydraulic stuff in place, but on my car the benefits include fitting a better power steering system, install Doug's headers, and gain much easier clutch operation.

I think of my car as a "gentleman's cruiser" and not a street rod. Your results may vary.

if I knew how to PM you I could send you the video I made of fitting the bellhousing. I don't know if it is possible to post a video on here

You must use a 10.5 bell housing to use a 10.5 130 tooth flywheel. You can also just use the 4.354 or 4.807 bearing retainer instead of machining an original bell housing, depending on what front bearing and bolt circle is in your trans.
