A friend has a 1976 Toyota Chinook (small camper thing), with a 20R. The alternator is dead, and I know it supposedly is hard to match up alternators because they don't all plug into one another in Yota's. He also has a 1981 Toyota 4x4, with a 22R that just cracked the block, but has a newly rebuilt alternator.
The plugs in the wiring harnesses are different for both alternators. My question is, can we cut the plug out of the '81 and splice it to the wires in the '76 to make the alternator work? Or will it not charge because it is a different system?

Here are USA locations that show to have your alternator used with the 20R

I don't know the answer to your question.
I thought $25.00 and $30.00 was cheap for anything Toyota.
It appears that the Corolla also used that altenator.
Amperage on a motorhome is important.

I put a 78 Honda alt on a friend's 71 Land Cruiser in a pinch once, he left it on for 6 years because it was working fine even with the belt alignment off a bit.

If it looks the same externally I'd give it shot since you have it there, the camper doesn't have a high amp alt that I recall because the camper part ran off a separate battery system on those years from what I recall.

Yes, it does run two batteries. So we could run the other alternator from the '81 4x4, but would cutting the plug from the '81 and splicing it to the '76 to make the '81 alternator fit in the '76 be a problem? Or would it most likely work?

I would do it, splice it into the 76 but try to preserve the original wiring on the camper in case you ever want to hunt down the "correct" alt.

Biggest question is if it's internally or externally regulated - if the number of wires are the same, it's just a matter of matching them up.
