i am thinking about doing the body work on my car. the most i have to repair are the quarter panels but i want to prep the car myself for paint so i can save a lot of money. what are the bare essential tools I will need to get this job done. Please give me some detailed insight,ie. instead of saying sander, throw out a brand and grit, something to that effect for me if you could. thanks

Go to search and type in 'body work tutorial' under the keywords.
There's a good thread that explains a lot about it.

Get a hammer and dolly set to shape metal. Harbor Freight sells them fairly cheaply.

eastwood.com has a kit for $62 bucks comes with like 4 different shape dollies and 3 hammers ... chisel shrink & pick. you cant beat the price. i have been using that set and the quality is pretty darn good. i paid $79 for mine the price has come down lol
even comes with a carry case. a local bodyshop guy told me about the kit

First off do you have a compressor to run tools properly? But im doing the same thing and here is some things you may or maynot need.

Good air compressor or buy electric versions of tools
Welder
Body saw or cut off tool
Grinder
hammer and dolly set
Dual action sander/random orbit sander either electric or air
set of blocks for block sanding Dura Block has a nice set for like $50
If you plan to sand yourself assorted grits 80-320 grit will need both disc and sheets. This should get you to atleast the primer stage.
Fillers I use Duraglass (short hair fiberglass filler) and Evercoat (light weight filler)
GOOD Grease and Wax remover
Filler spreaders
LOTS of paint sticks

This all should give you a good start. Then buy things as you needed them.

I hope you can watch utube, Watch this man and the tools he uses and why and how he does his work and you will see a few tools that is needed
