I'm going to look for a diff and want to make sure I have my facts straight. If the diff is 43 inches between perches, then it will bolt in my dart and "might be" from an A body. I know a 8.1/4 and a 8.3/4 when I see it. I'm not clear on flange vs drum length. I just don't want to buy something that has to be modified. Will someone explain what to measure? Outside or inside of flange or drum. That is what I need clarified. Thanks Craig

Going tomorrow and was hoping for some help. Maybe an obvious questions but, I haven't bought an A-body diff before.

I'll post the whole 8 3/4" thing again for those who didn't get it the first time:

Housing widths, flange to flange on A BODY should be 52 5/8" hard to measure accurately across diff though. key to identifying a-body 8 3/4 is small bolt pattern axles 5 0n 4" pattern vs larger 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern.

Standard measurement for the A body rear 43" center to center on the perches.

I had a brand new ford 9 inch rear built for me for the same price as a used 489 mopar rear. You should weigh your options before you make your purchase. Cant beat those ford 9 inchers!

Flange length means very little. What matters is the end to end of the drums or the drum length. That's where your wheels bolt up, right? Getting the wheels properly positioned in the wheel wells is what matters, right? No one posted that measurement. Everything measurement except that. If I'm not mistaken the total end to end drum width for an A-body is 57-1/8"

Thanks fishy68. That is what I was looking for. I understand now that I got to see and measure a 8 3/4. Didn't buy cause I thought 400 was too much for just a housing with axles and no drums.
