I agree that Starrett is best, with Mitutoyo 2nd. BUT -- measuring tools are only as good as the operator.
I have Mitutoyo micrometers and digital (yes, digital!) calipers. They work fine. I was a machinist for 10 years and I checked my digital calipers against my micrometers. They work fine, but they are only good for rough measurements (within about .002"). You don't want to be checking bearing clearances with them. Same goes for dial calipers.
Whatever you buy, make sure you know how to use them properly. If you don't know, get somebody who does to show you how.
